Did The Yanks Make An Offer To Kevin Millar?

Just saw this via Dan Roche last week –

It looks like former Red Sox and Oriole first baseman Kevin Millar will become a Toronto Blue Jay.

The deal is expected to be finalized Friday and announced later on this afternoon. It’s expected to be a minor league deal.

Millar chose between offers from the Yankees and Blue Jays. Playing time was probably the biggest factor. In New York, he would have been brought in as a good clubhouse influence.

What did the Yankees want with Kevin Millar? Ewwww…

What the heck about Kevin Millar makes him a good clubhouse influence? He’s obnoxious.

Frankly, he’s perfect for Toronto. They seem to have a thing for aging hitters that rub people the wrong way (Hillenbrand, Thomas…)

steve, have you seen how terrible the bench currently is right now?

millar would be the best right hand bat on it.

When would be play? Tex is at 1B, hardly misses a game. And, you’ve already got 4 guys fighting for time at the 3 positions of LF/RF/DH. Millar would be lucky to see 100 PA if he was on the Yankees.

Which is probably why he decided to sign with Toronto.

Assuming Gardnery/Nady are the regular CF/RF, that means our bench includes Nick Swisher (1B/OF), Jose Molina (C), Melky Cabrera (OF), and the winner of the Cody Ransom/Angel Berroa utility infield competition.

Unless I’m forgetting anyone, I just don’t see where Millar would’ve fit. How many backup 1B does one team really need? Swisher’s younger than Millar and both have an identical career 112 OPS+.

There’s no place on this team for Millar, no matter how crappy the bench might appear to be (and I don’t think it’s that crappy, honestly).

Yes, but the team needs a UTIL infielder, not another 1st baseman.

This is part of the reason the Yanks haven’t had much of a bench over the past 5-6 years. You can make this case for just about every position on the Yankees.

I wouldn’t assume that yet. I believe the team is better with Swish as an every day RF and Nady coming off the bench.

Don’t get me wrong, I completely agree that Swish would be the better starting option. I’m just guessing that because of Swish’s versatility he ends up being shuffled around a lot whereas Nady will be pretty regular in RF.

Swisher’s so-called versatility is mediocre, coz he doesn’t excel at any bloody position. Hopefully he will be traded IMO because he was so shitty with the White Sox last year and I have very low hopes for him.

Someone mentioned that Millar is not a good clubhouse presence??!! Unh? Say what you want about the guy, but he is a positive clubhouse presence. This somewhat corporate team needs someone who doesn’t have such a bug up their ass! And unlike any current Yankees he won a ring in the last five years. Some people might not like the guy because he was part of the 2004 Miracle team but hey, Johnny Damonic likes him so he can’t be that bad………
