• Wild Thought: One Question For A-Rod

    Posted by on February 17th, 2009 · Comments (23)

Today is Alex Rodriguez Day in Yankeeland. So, why wouldn’t today’s wild thought be an A-Rod thing?

This morning, I saw the tent and chair set-up, via ESPN, that’s been constructed in Tampa for Alex’s big press conference today. And, related, during my morning commute, I heard Mark Feinsand interviewed on X-M Radio talking about what the scene will be like there this afternoon during the conference. This all kick-started my day-dream engines, making me wish that I had a chance to attend the conference today, live, and maybe even being able to ask a question. Continuing with this, I thought, to myself, “If I could be there, and could only ask one question, what would I ask?”

Noodling this, I quickly dismissed the questions that most would probably want to know – about what he used, where he got it, who helped him with it, etc. Because, you know, he will not answer those types of questions – or will dance around them. (At least, I think that he would avoid those type of questions.)

In the end, the one question that I would love to ask A-Rod, today, if I could be at the presser and was allowed to ask just one question would be this:

In your opinion, given everything that’s happened around you in the last five years, do you feel that you’ve become a negative distraction to your team and/or an embarrassment to the Yankees organization?

I’m not sure how Alex would answer that one. I suppose that he would say “No” and then rationalize away on why he felt that way. Or, maybe he would say “Yes” and then apologize for it happening and promise that it will change in the future? I dunno…but, I would just love for someone to ask him that question, live, face-to-face, for the world to see, etc.

How about you? If you could ask Rodriguez just one question today, what would it be?

He’d probably answer it by saying that the current situation is an embarrassment to the Yankees and he’s sorry for that…and that’s why he’s there today to address all of the questions and move past it so it could limit distractions for the 09 Yankees. I can see why you’d want that answered, but it’s very easy to be cast aside like I just did.

Personally, i’d rather ask a question that puts him on the spot and one, if he were to cast it aside, would look bad for him. Maybe something along the lines of, “Alex, some would argue that with your admission, the home run record is not tainted. You said in your ESPN interview that you want to dedicate yourself to cleaning up the game and showing the youth that you made a mistake, so what are your plans for the $6 million in bonuses that you will earn when passing each current home run milestone?”

      now tainted, not “not”

I’d ask him: “Without naming names, from your own personal direct knowledge, or by direct admission to you (not hearsay), how many other major league players have used steroids or HGH?”

He’d never answer that, of course.

      Here’s my question:
Why do baseball fans speak of clubhouse chemistry and clubhouse “distractions” when there is no evidence that there is any relationship between these things and a team’s winning games?

    6. February 17th, 2009 | 1:48 pm

jonm – there’s no evidence to support the theory that Jimmy Hoffa is dead. But, do we really need evidence to know that is true?

But, do we really need evidence to know that is true?
      ——-
The point is, we don’t really know that it is true. To simply say it’s true because we “just know it” makes no sense.

Many fans take their cue from reporters, who take their cue from players.

Having said that, just because someone thinks it to be true, doesn’t mean it is.

Then again, clubhouse chemistry is the reason Rodriguez is having a press conference right now ;)

How long did A-Rod answer questions today, was it just 35 minutes?

I know for certain that the moon is made of cheese and I don’t need any evidence to “prove” that truth.

      OK jon.

Good question; from what I saw in the cafeteria, it seemed that he was reading a prepared statement. So I don’t think there was much of a Q&A session. Then again, he’d be there all day/night if there were one…

FWIW, it was only Rodriguez, Cashman & Girardi there.

Pettitte did an hour last year with the media. I can’t believe that A-Rod only did 35 minutes.

      Raf…from ESPN.com

The three-time AL MVP started his news conference by reading from a prepared statement. At the end, he paused for 37 seconds to collect himself, turned to his teammates and simply said “thank you.” Sitting in the front row were Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada.

Thanks, bfriley76. I didn’t see them; the camera angle only showed the dais (CNN feed).

No prob. It’s weird that they weren’t captured on camera at all, especially considering the pre-conference press that they were getting for planning to attend.

That’s funny I was Jimmy Hoffa at a 711 with Elvis and Jim Morrisson last night! Anyway, I saw the old guard Yankees in the press conference and it was not a satisfactory press conference. Even when Aclod tries to right a wrong we didn’t get that much. Steve, knowing Roidriguez ,it’s no shock that he did only 35 minutes.

Why bother doing more than 35 minutes? He could’ve done 6 hours and someone would’ve found a reason to be dissatisfied with either the duration of the press conference or the quality/reliability of the statement.

At this point, Alex owes absolutely nothing to anyone. He did it, it’s done. People will hate him anyway so he may as well do it all on his terms and let the squawkers squawk.

Mate, he brought all this mess upon himself. Yes, Selena Roberts (the Amazon reporter) is a terrific bore and an overzealous harpy BUT Arod seems to bring this karma upon himself time and time again. What next? an orgy with Madonna and beats? I mean c’mon with this guy. He owes nothing? Aroid wants to go to the Hall of Fame so he wants to make himself look good, but at this rate he might go to the Hall of Shame.

He owes nothing to anyone. He did it to himself and he said as much today. Beyond that, who cares? The rest is all window-dressing for the media to discuss, analyze, and put through their boring media meat-grinder. It’ll be served to us for the next several days whether we’re hungry for it or not…

Look, the Yanks paid near 300 million to get the all natural home run king….now that money is for naught, honestly. He owes the fans and the organization something and that is sadly the case, no matter what we think individually.

      Yes.

What he owes for that contract is to do the best that he can for the next 9 years.

      That’s all.

No, not really. Had he pissed away his career like Strawberry or Gooden, maybe that would be the case.
