Sheehan: Yanks Have Right Pen In ‘09 WasWatching.com Water Cooler Talk 3/3/09
Mar 02

According to Steve Kelley, John Wetteland can now laugh off the 1995 ALDS. (Hat tip to BBTF.)

I’ve shared this before, but, I’ll say it again: After the winning run scored in the [1995] ALDS for Seattle, I sat, on my knees, on the floor, about a foot away from the TV, for what seemed like an hour. I couldn’t move. For whatever reason, this one really hurt – probably because of the lead they blew in the series and the fact that it had been so long since Yankees October baseball.

So, you’ll forgive me if I don’t laugh along with Wetteland. (Although, to his credit, Wetteland did say that the failure in 1995 was a motivator for him in 1996.)

That was a tough series… I figured they’d punt the game against Johnson, and win the series in 4. Then Kaimie blew a 5 run lead, and I figured with Cone going, they’d be set…

Little did I know that Edgar would bat damn near .600.

What’s lost in Wetteland’s game 4 is that he did decently in game 2. Only gave up a HR to Griffey, who was also hot that series.

that was a tough series. i still refuse to watch griffey score that final run. it pains me that was mattingly’s last game. i was in attendance for the famous 15th inning leyritz home run. it was madness at the stadium.

So was I. I was there singing “NY, NY” with the rest of the crowd, and never have I heard a crowd so loud as when Mattingly went deep.
