  • Wild Thought: Roy Halladay

Via John Harper the other day -

All along the Mets have been thinking, privately at least, that they could be in a position to trade for Matt Holliday in late July, and add the big bat they passed on this winter. As in, you know, Manny Ramirez.

Only now they just hope they don’t find themselves needing Roy Halladay, the Blue Jays’ ace who could be available if Toronto is buried early in the killer AL East.

The Roy Halladay part leads to today’s wild thought.

If Doc Halladay becomes available this summer, should the Yankees be in on the bidding to get him? Imagine sliding him into the rotation and then moving Joba to the pen? (That would be one way to ensure that Chamberlain does not exceed 140 IP this year.)

The question is: At what cost? If you had to trade Phil Hughes and other prospects for Halladay, would you do it? (We know that Cashman won’t do it.) Would Hank Stein allow the Mets to trade for both Johan Santana and Roy Halladay? That’s a good one.

Me? I think the Yankees would have to be in on it – like how they got David Cone years ago. You just can’t let someone like Halladay float by without at least kicking the tires on an offer to get him, right?

we have no idea what the yankees would or would not do. just because they did not do something for one ace in a different situation two years, does not mean they wouldn’t react differently for a different ace in whatever situation this summer may bring.

i think you have to kick the tires any time someone like a doc halladay becomes available, but hopefully we will be in a situation where the cost would far outweigh the reward (because our rotation is rolling). because you can bet it would take a whole lot more than hughes to land halladay, especially paying an inter-division tax. would be pretty sick to have two of the top 3 pitchers in baseball the last 3 years in one rotation though.

Anyone who wouldn’t trade Hughes+ for Halladay has to be on peyote. But I can’t believe the Jays won’t get a much better offer than that from somebody. Phil Hughes isn’t worth a sack of baseballs at this point.

Of course Cashman would at least call Riccardi about Doc, but I can’t imagine JP wanting to deal inside the division. I’m not so sure Big Stein cares enough about the Mets to try to prevent a trade to them.

The funny part of this story to me is the Mets assuming they can get Holliday, so they just say “forget it” to Manny. Don’t forget that Manny only costs money and no prospects. Gotta love them Mets.

Peyote is still legal for some people to use. You gotta find an even more controlled substance. :-P

First thing first, the fan base in Toronto would go nuts if Retardi traded Halladay. JP is very unpopular up there and the Rogers want to keep Halladay . Retardi would be psychically assaulted if he sent Halladay to the Yanks to a lesser degree, but a trade to his beloved Red Sox would mark him a wanted man! They need at least one star attraction to get people to go to the games so the Rogers want to keep him. Maybe if they get a new GM next year, then it might happen. I highly doubt it since Halladay has expressed a desire to stay in Toronto.

I’ve seen proposals from Texas and Philly fans that are really good. The Yanks would have to give up, a Joba, an Austin Jackson, and that is just for starters. Toronto has tons of young relievers so they don’t need any more. And they have Cecil and Romero in their system who can step up next year or this one. They really need a shortstop READY now like a Jose Reyes for example. And since Rolen and Overbay have two years left , they need a type 1a prospect or league ready 1st and 3rd basemen. The Mets are not a good fit but neither are the Yanks in that regard.
