    Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano and reliever Damaso Marte returned to camp from the World Baseball Classic on Friday, bringing with them injuries that may sideline them for a few days. Team doctors will examine both players on Saturday.

    Cano said he felt some stiffness behind his right shoulder, which he said began bothering him even before he left Yankees camp for the WBC, though he said the team didn’t know. He played through the condition for his native Dominican Republic, finishing with three hits in a team-high 13 at-bats over three games, though the Dominicans failed to get past the first round.

    “It never went away,” said Cano, who thought the stiffness in his right shoulder would subside with stretching.

    Marte said he felt tightness in his left pectoral muscles while lifting weights on Tuesday morning. Later in the day, Marte pitched one inning with a two strikeouts in the Dominican Republic’s tournament-ending loss to the Netherlands.

    “Hopefully it’s not much,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “Hopefully both of them bounce back quickly. But it’s not how you want them coming back.”

    Hearing this, something tells me that Cano and Marte will never have to worry about what to wear to a Mensa meeting…

      Why, because they played through discomfort? They aren’t the first, nor will they be the last to do so.

      I’m not sure that wanting to help their country in the WBC makes them dumb. It just means that the WBC is important to them.

      In general, though, I am against the macho “Play through your pain!” attitude that permeates sports.

      Why?

      ~~~Cano said he felt some stiffness behind his right shoulder, which he said began bothering him even before he left Yankees camp for the WBC, though he said the team didn’t know.~~~
      You don’t tell the team? That’s dumb.
      ~~~Marte said he felt tightness in his left pectoral muscles while lifting weights on Tuesday morning. Later in the day, Marte pitched one inning with a two strikeouts in the Dominican Republic’s tournament-ending loss to the Netherlands. ~~~

      You pitch after hurting yourself lifting? That’s dumber.

      Dumb and Dumber…like I said.

      Unless you’re Carl Pavano, you’re not going to tell the team every little ouchie you have. I know I didn’t when I played. Feeling tightness after lifting weights isn’t out of the ordinary and nothing I would concern myself with. Sometimes things work themselves out.

      ~~ I know I didn’t when I played.~~

      With all due respect, there’s a big difference between playing on a non-pro team and playing for a team who is paying you MILLIONS to play. There’s no excuse for a player on the Yankees not to tell the trainer that he’s hurting.

      Ahem. Or it’s smart, because you want to play in this big event you really care about and know that if you tell anybody about your probably minor injury, you won’t get to.

      This isn’t necessarily about stupidity. It’s about priorities.

      Quite honestly, I’m of Australian descent , an American and a Yankee fan so I don’t give a bloody hell about what Dumb and Dumber’s priority is to the Dominican team is. They are being paid quite well to play in the Bronx, national pride be damned. Not to be totally insensitive, but what might be important to Marte and Cano has absolutely no relevance to Yankees Inc or the fanbase. I don’t want to see or hear another year of excuses of this and that from Robbie Don’t You Know!

      The DR team in the WBC is more important than the Yankees? If Cano thinks this, you’re right, he’s not dumb – he’s brain dead.

      Really? Why? The money? He already has plenty of money.

      Just because the WBC doesn’t matter to you doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter to him. And I think it’s perfectly reasonable of him to put his country before his employer.

      This comes, BTW, from someone who’s not particularly nationalistic.

      No offense taken.

      Point is, the stiffness/tightness was not uncomfortable enough not to play. I don’t take days off from work because I don’t feel up to it, and I’m sure you don’t either. I don’t tell my boss everytime I don’t feel well.

      This isn’t Kirk Gibson on bum legs, this is routine aches and pains that come with the territory of being an athlete. Happens with everyone who plays, whether they’re paid to do it or not.

      I’m just trying to figure a reason why these injuries are Brian Cashman’s fault…

      …or A-Rod’s fault…

      …nothing’s coming to me….
