its pretty pathetic how a-rod dominates the paper in a non-story and the president is small in the corner with the nation in crisis

OK…I’m seriously starting to think that A-Rod knows exactly what he’s doing, knows this are all horrible decisions, and makes them to see the type of reaction he’ll get. There’s no other excuse, right? Why else would he agree to that photo?

      i’d go with gettin paid

    4. March 17th, 2009 | 11:33 am

I’m trying to imagine the reaction a photographer would get if he asked Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Bobby Murcer, Roy White, Thurman Munson, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, Paul O’Neill, Mariano Rivera or Derek Jeter to kiss themselves in the mirror, as a photo-op. Somehow, I don’t see them going for it.

Heck, I can’t imagine Mike Stanley, Goose Gossage, Joe Girardi, Chris Chambliss, Spike Owen, Graig Nettles, Chad Curtis, or Ron Hassey going for it either…

But, I can just see the photographer telling A-Rod that it would be a great idea for a photo, with the mindless follower then replying with “Really, do you think so? O.K,. sure. How’s this? Should I kiss myself with my eyes open or closed? ”

I’m sorry, but, *ballplayers* don’t pose for pictures where they’re kissing themselves in the mirror. They, just, don’t…or, at least, they shouldn’t.

I don’t really have a problem with it.

The truth is, A-Rod is hilarious and has always been hilarious. It’s just that he’s always taken himself so seriously. Here’s hoping this is a sign that he’s going to stop trying to be Derek Jeter and instead embrace his inner Manny Ramirez. Personally, I’d look forward to such a change.

      Hey…Joe Namath wore pantyhose.

I don’t have a problem with it either, but if he’s as concerned with how he’s perceived by the public as much as been reported in the past, this seems like another one in a line of really dumb choices.

I hope Justin’s scenario is right. Maybe he is OK with himself and doesn’t care what other people think.

    7. March 17th, 2009 | 12:08 pm

According to Pete Abe, A-Rod’s PR people sent him a link to the Details story…so, it sounds like Camp A-Rod is proud of this moment, FWIW.

if i was gettin paid to kiss myself in the mirror what a-rod is gettin paid i’d do the same thing myself

Do you people really think he gets paid to appear in a magazine? You’ve got to be kidding. It’s publicity. I’m a professional photographer and i’ll tell you the absolute truth, people don’t get paid to appear in mags. NEVER! Did anyone bother to read the story, or did you just show up to criticize the images? It’s a good story and it even gets into media’s hand in all this. Everyones ripping of a-rod just makes me sympathize with him. He just keeps getting pushed to the ground and repeatedly kicked while he’s down. If you’re a fan feeding into this, you’re not a fan, your a sheep, following orders for the media machine. Let the dude play baseball and leave it at that.

~~Let the dude play baseball and leave it at that.~~

If he would *just* play baseball, people would probably leave it at that.

come on steve…all baseball players are doing other things. a-rod is just the only one getting grilled for it. Did you hear anything about jeters comments on david wright? i haven’t heard a peep about that being a stab at a-rod, have you?

I guess I prefer ARod’s method of “self love” than Coney’s alleged method :D

Let’s be honest. If this were the year 2000, and Mike Piazza were caught doing this, as Yankees fans, would we be sitting around saying things like it’s just Mike being hilarious and that everyone should leave him alone?

Good point. Everyone would be ragging on Piazza and taking shots at his sexuality. That being said, people didn’t hate Piazza the way they hate A-Rod.

I fully admit that it would be best if A-Rod just kept himself out of the public eye for a short while. As much as I believe that he gets ripped on for no good reason, this magazine/photo spread isn’t doing him any favors. In contrast with many other stories about him which are unfair and target him needlessly, this is something he chose to do and thus any fallout or mockery that comes of it is something he has to live with.

I can only speak for myself, but I would be indifferent to it, as I was during the “Z0MG PIAZZA IZ T3H GHEY!!!11!!!!1″ episode…

Unless a player does something stupid (Joba’s drunk driving charge, Pascual’s drug suspension), or does something worth reporting (Munson’s plane crash, Lyman Bostock murdered), or even something positive (Mo Vaughn’s charity work), I really don’t pay too much attention to it.

No, I completely agree that these images aren’t really helping him. I never said that. I just sick of one dude getting dumped on, that’s all. There are other photos in that story that are much stronger, but obviously Details want to sell mags and this image gets the non-Details reader to stop and look and maybe by the mag and read the article. I’m in the arena that he should become a recluse. No interviews, not photo-shoots, no media, no going out, no celeb friends. Just hang with Tex and play some video games on road trip. Zero spotlight. If the news has nothing to report, then he can’t get in any trouble, maybe,. They are creative in making shit come out of thin air. I still want to know if you heard about Jeter’s comments getting any response cause I haven’t and it could definitely be taken as a stab at a-rod, even though it probably wasn’t.

Yes Raf, I hat’s what I think. Unless it has to do with legality or injury, I don’t want to hear about off the field stuff. I don’t even really care about the legality stuff unless it affects them being on the field.

      ==========================
I would be. I laughed at all the hilarious stuff Manny did, too.

I can’t say I get the connection between Piazza and Rodriguez, though. Are we going to start up a bunch of baseless “A-Rod’s gay” rumors? And, if so, can Belle and Sebastian sing a song about it? Because that would totally make it worth it.

    19. March 17th, 2009 | 3:38 pm

Justin – FWIW, I wasn’t making any sexual preference connections/implications. More so, I was just playing on the fact that they’re both (A-Rod and Piazza) “pretty boys” – meaning extremely metrosexual – as opposed to player who doesn’t give a crap about having highlights in his hair, looks gruff when he plays, etc. That’s all. Some players seem more concerned about having a GQ look more than anything else…like Mike and Alex.

And, yeah, you could say that Jeter is a somewhat pretty boy too. But, he gets a pass because his rep as a player is not the same as A-Rod and Piazza – meaning that the rest of the league doesn’t think he’s weak and they actually respect the guy.

      Okay, I can see that.

Just to be clear, I wasn’t trying to accuse you of anything. I just didn’t get the connection.

No problem. And, thanks for allowing me to test the new quote buttons on comments here! ;-)

Arod can’t get a break. If he farts it’s a crime, if he laughs he’s a phony, I mean when is enough enough? And the gay thing? I think that he’s in love with himself and deeply insecure at the same time! He can never win, then again he gives the press the rope to hang himself with all the time…..
