If they had a suitable replacement for him at shortstop. People keep trying to move him and never think about that. And other people seem to think Ramiro Pena is all of a sudden going to start OPSing .800 after a career in the minors of barely being over .600.

Your original quote about Cano hacking it in pinstripes is very telling. If Cano can’t field the position and is a dud offensively THEN it could be a good idea to say good bye to Cano and give Jeter a chance at second. Then again, Jeter doesn’t look like he would be a bad outfielder at this point either. But would he have the pop to be a “Yankee” outfielder? And for the guy who says that the Yanks should make sense and be rid of Jeter…..St Derek…Mr Yankee himself being shown the door whereas the more volatile PR (and more productive )and ringless player, Arod gets a richer contract and stays? Why should Cano be moved off his position to accomodate Jeter? How many players need to be moved for this guy? If Cano is doing a good job (and he certainly did a good job from 2005-2007) then there’s no reason to move Cano to LF for Jeter.

It has been done before with other players. If he does, Jeter will not be the first or last to change positions.

I know it has been done before. But has it been done before by a 37 year old career infielder moving to the OF?

I’m not saying it’s IMPOSSIBLE. I’m just saying I don’t think it’s as easy as people think it is and, further, seems like a waste of time to me. The Yanks shouldn’t be making a habit of re-signing 37 year old players.

There’s no shortage of LF’ers that can do better than Jeter can with both the stick and the glove. If he can’t play SS and if 2B is occupied with Cano, I’m sorry, he’s got to go. Most every other franchise runs their business in a sensible manner. I just wish the Yanks could see that there will be life after Jeter, just as there has been life after Bernie (as there was life after Mickey, Yogi, Joe D). Fans will get over it.

A 37 year-old career infielder moving to OF — even for a guy like Jeter who is still a good enough athlete — won’t be easy.

While I don’t want to get into this too much, given that I don’t have a dog in this fight, ranging to his right @ SS is a lot different than ranging to his right in the LF power alley.

Given enough work and time to prepare, I see no reason why a player wouldn’t be able to learn the outfield and play passable defense. I don’t expect Jeter to be a Greg Luzinski type butcher out there in the OF, though stranger things have happened.
