Since 1954, only three Yankees non-pitchers, who were age 25 or younger, had both a hit and a sac-bunt on Opening Day:

    Brett Gardner, today.
    Robinson Cano in 2006.
    And, Willie Randolph in 1977.

This information and roughly $409,000 will get you a 2009 Maybach 62 Sedan.

On a related note I believe that in 1962 Bobby Richardson led the league in both basehits and sacrifice hits. And I think he’s the only Yankee to have done that.

Brett Gardner looked good in Spring Training but can he be productive enough with more pop than Melky? If he doesn’t work out do they go with Melky(good fielder but stats are not that great), Damone(not a good centerfielder but has the stats) or Swisher( not a good centerfielder and who knows about power/stats this year relative to Damon)Once again,it’s much too soon to tell BUT true about the 409,000 and a Maybach 62 Sedan!

So far, I was pleased with Brett. Got on base, laid down great bunts, and didnt try and push singles into doubles foolishly. Keep it up little guy!

Gardner doesn’t need more “pop” than Melky. All he needs to do out of the 9 hole is have a league average obp, sac bunt when we need him too, not hit the ball in the air and steal bags when he gets on. If he can do that he’ll be far more valuable than Melky ever could be, but still with less “pop.”

I like Gardner’s scrappiness, too. BUT when Molina catches(and if he replaces Georgy Juiced one) and the 6-9 is Ransom, Molina and Gardner that is almost like an NL lineup rather than an AL one. And quite frankly, the Yanks need to shore up offense a bit. Yes, the addition of Teix helps but nothing is assured, especially since Tampa is a “real” team right now not a AAAA squad. The Yanks can ill afford to “experiment” and say:”we’ll get the wild card anyway, there’s no competition.” That paradigm shift occured last year with the ascent of the Sunrays of St Petersburg. 2008 was the year that the Yankees became the Tankees and I don’t want to see a return performance to that status. I would love to see BG work in centerfield BUT will the Yanks be patient with him if he falters? My answer is obviously no…..

I totally follow you on the Ransom,Molina,Gardner potential for crapiness. I would like to think our Starter would keep the opponents runs down to where it doesnt hurt to much. I would like to….

Yeah butch I agree, that 6-9 will be tough to swallow.
