Anyone BUT Ca$hman or Jean, that's my motto. Buck is not the GM type, but he sure as hell knows baseball. I would accept someone of that stature as the Yankee GM and Purpura is not a bad idea. I would rather see Gillick as GM and Showalter as the asst GM actually. Pulling out Gillick out of retirement to win his last title and make those oh so right tweaks would be great. Roadrider, Buck has a bug up his butt but he knows talent, you can't take that away from him.

yYs to replacing Cashman (don't really know much about Afterman) but NO to Showalter. I would grant you that He's more palatable as a GM than as a field manager (I still haven't forgiven him for the 1995 playoffs) but he's wound way too tight and would either burn out or wear out his welcome very quickly.

I don't think Cashman needs replacing, but I wouldn't mind Buck getting a significant role in player development, or even him being the GM, if it comes to that.

I think a great deal of Buck as an evaluator of baseball talent. He didn't really build the Diamondbacks so much as help them choose the right free agents to buy, but that's an important decision-making talent, too.

I'd prefer Pail DePodest as assistant GM.

As for Buck Showlater, his personality isn't right for the GM job (and may not even be right for managing).

He is a brilliant guy, bright mind, but his personality, his attitude, and his personal skills just don't fit right, a GM job here would amplify those issues with the media (before, since he was managing when the yanks were improving, he got a bit of a pass but still had his share of media problems).

I do think he could do a great job in baseball in the right role, but its got to be a job with minimal interaction with other folks.
