[Brett] Tomko had a 0.69 E.R.A. through Tuesday, allowing one run in 13 innings, with 15 strikeouts and four walks [in Triple-A].

Tomko is not on the 40-man roster, but that is not the reason he remains in the minors. Tomko has dealt with a mild oblique strain this week and the Yankees want to make sure he is healed.

“We’re happy we have Tomko, and I’m sure you’re going to see him soon enough,” Brian Cashman said. “He’s doing everything he can do and he’s a big choice for us. If we make that choice, we just want to make sure he’s ready to go. I’m sure he’ll be fine rather soon.”

Ah, the Cashman stamp of approval. For those new to our planet, this means that Tomko should be just as good as Jay Witasick, Felix Heredia, Paul Quantrill, Gabe White, Juan Acevedo, Billy Traber, Octavio Dotel, Jim Brower, LaTroy Hawkins, Bret Prinz, and Felix Rodriguez were for the Yankees…working out of their pen.

If you wanted to create a list of failed bullpen pitchers for every GM, you would be spending the next 3 months working on it. No GM’s stamp of approval means very much for bullpen guys.

Let me guess: the long list of failed starters Cashman has acquired is somehow not his fault either?

Steve, once again your criticism is off the mark. Are you upset that Brett Tomko is in the organization or are you upset that Cashman said something positive about a guy that is, in all reality, not very good?

If it is the former, I don’t see what the fuss is. Who out there in the baseball universe was passed over in order to make room for Tomko on the AAA roster? Is there someone the Yanks should’ve targeted but missed?

If it is the latter, what is Cashman supposed to say? Would you prefer if he’d said “We’ll call Tomko up but I expect him to be complete crap so, please, folks, don’t bother watching TV the day he pitches or else you’ll puke in your mouths!”

There’s really nothing you can complain about with Tomko so I don’t get what you’re going for here…except to take another shot at Cashman for the sake of it.

is there a difference between sending tomko out instead of veras/edwar anyways?

Of course he’s going to have a long list, the man’s been there since ’98.

yeah tomko isn’t the best guy I would want coming out of the pen but given the options presented so far this season, why not give him a try?

Um. Every single team has a long list of failed bullpen help. But we’re had some that have done good, otherwise I don’t believe we’d have make it to the post season all those years in a row. There are Cashman supporters, rational folk and Cashman haters. You really put yourself in the far right category here.
