Tino Martinez replaced Don Mattingly as the Yankees first baseman in 1996. And, Jason Giambi replaced Martinez in 2002. Lastly, Mark Teixeira replaced Giambi this season.
So, how did each of these new Yankees first sackers do, with the bat, in their first 28 games with the Yankees? See below:
Mark Teixeira 2009: G PA R H HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG 28 130 18 21 7 17 21 23 .198 .338 .434 Tino Martinez 1996: G PA R H HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG 28 128 15 28 4 19 14 14 .255 .336 .400 Jason Giambi 2002: G PA R H HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG 28 123 14 29 4 15 14 25 .274 .374 .443
Giambi got off to a better start than Martinez and Teixeira. And, actually, the starts for Mark and Tino are somewhat close.
In any event, it probably goes without saying that Yankees fans would like to start seeing more from Teixeira with the bat…than what we’ve seen so far from him…

Have you seen Teix’s splits? It was as if he had forgotten how to bat lefty.

Have you seen Teix in the field? It’s as if he’s forgotten how to play 1B. I was at the game on Saturday and I was embarrassed for him. He completely spaced out on one play and botched two others.
Bad games happen but if you’re not hitting, at least flash the leather.

Strange – it was his left wrist that he hurt…and that would bother a RH batter more…

I wonder how much the pressure of playing in NY has had on Teix. Yeah, he’s had two homers the last two games, but he hasn’t been all that great lately. Interesting that he has numbers close to Tino and we know how he ended up…..

I was sitting behind home and in his next AB, when he was in the on-deck circle, I made sure to refresh his memory on a simple little league play called “don’t break for the bag when the ball is hit right at you and you can field it yourself you stupid idiot.”

It apears that the Yankees needed to bring up a backup first baseman last week to give Tex a rest. It definetly is not his wrist that is injured and whatever it is it is worse than the Yankees say and it is effecting his fielding and his right handed batting. The Yankees put him a bad position by leaving him third and not resting him. Clueless Joe setting another player up for failure.

Torre’s managing the Dodgers, last I checked.

I don’ think he’ll have a problem. He needs to pick it up, but I think he’ll help carry the team come summer. I like the new layout by the way. No new yankees art found? I may be able to help, if you’re interested.

Thanks. I’m trying to keep in very simple. At the most, I might go for a larger WW banner at the top…something like what I have now…just in a 750×150 size format. I’m still mulling that over. What I really like about the new format is that you can click the down arrows on the widget boxes on the side, and then they stay closed, even after refreshing. It’s helpful when you want to hide graphics…in case someone at work may be looking at over your shoulder…or if you want to have the widget for the recent comments be the only one pen, etc.

I love the irony that Gym Teacher Girardi gets that moniker now! It’s ironic, because Joe is so intelligent in interviews and did a great job of breaking down the games for YES and FOX.On the surface , he seems to be a brilliant tatician , however in practice he has not looked so good. Then again, as I consistently emphasize look at the team Cash Man has assembled, not a bargain for 200 mill. One of my brothers asked me, If I thought that Torre has a feeling that the team would go downhill from 2007? I can only say that Torre was less clueless than we had thought……….

Maybe. But if you take Torre’s word at face-value, he wanted to come back for 2008 but couldn’t accept their contract. Hence, if the contract had been to his liking, he’d have taken the job so he couldn’t have thought too poorly of the team’s 2008 prospects.
Again, only if you take Torre’s words at par.
