rest of the league vs. the AL East so far: 44-57 with only Seattle at 3-2 and LA at 8-5 as the only reams with a winning record…looks like we’re gonna have to beat the Sox after all

Should this bother me? (It does. Seems to happen alot.)

Today’s game. Jeter singles. Steals 2nd. Damon bunts Jeter to 3rd. Tex makes out. Jeter still on third with 2 outs in middle inning of 0-0 game. With 2 strikes, Arod takes a big upper cut and swings through a pitch for strike 3. End of inning.

Is Arod more interested in adding to his HR totals than just getting a single and scoring a run? Should he choke up and cut down his swing in that situation?

I think you could say that almost every player should cut down in that situation. I’m not sure its because A-Rod wants to add to his HR totals (you seem to be drinking the anti-A-Rod kool-aid with a statement like that.) Did you ever see Sheffield slow down his violent swing in a situation like that? I bet Pujols swings hard too. Giambi should have toned down his swing every time they shifted on him. Same with Ortiz or Pena. I don’t think its because they are trying to only hit HRs to increase their total.

      @ thenewguy:

Paul O’Neil just made the point I did above during Arod’s at bat in the 8th: Don’t swing for the fences when a base hit of any kind is what the situation requires.

And all I said was that most players swing for the fences when they don’t need to. And I was also saying that I don’t think A-Rod was standing in the batters box thinking “Wow, I really need to get my 556th home run right here. This at-bat affects my all-time legacy.” Was he swinging too hard? Yes. Do most players do this? Yes. Is it because A-Rod is an arrogant sycophant? Probably not.

Hey, was Damon swinging for the fences?

Good thing Arod was swinging for the fences in the 7th huh? No one else was hitting Slowey. Arod hits homers and Jeter hits singles. Thats who they are. Aceves and Tomko came up big today also.

Here’s a nice thought: Since the Yankees did something today that they’ve haven’t done in nearly 37 years it gives Yankee Stadium III a “highlight” that Yankee Stadium II never had. Pretty neat.

That and “arrogant sycophant” better fits Michael Kay or John Sterling than A-Rod.

Updating the 2009 HR Challenge Scoreboard:

      Alex Rodriguez: 3
      Brett Gardner: 2
      David Ortiz: 0

Anyway, I’m glad Steve got to see a win, and a great come-from-behind-walkoff win with twists and turns on both sides.

Only one problem: I’m going to tomorrow night’s game, and not only are the Yanks not only not going to get a walkoff win for me, the Twins must be about ready to murder someone after three crushing losses in a row. They’re also approximately 1 for a zillion with RISP in this series, and Ray Tolbert and Brendan Harris in the #2 spot right before Mauer with 2 outs seem to be at least half of those zillion. Overdue doesn’t begin to describe it.

And the only thing standing in the way? Andy Pettitte, who the last time he pitched at the Stadium gave up 4 HR to the Rays.

      Oboy. :-/

…and one more thing…not that Mike Francessa knows anymore about anything than you or me, but when the Twins rallied off Verlander and the Tigers’ pen on Thursday, he was moaning and groaning about how the Twins are coming into the Stadium roaring with a ton of momentum, and about how this is not a good time to be facing the Twins.

I imagine Mike will be singing a different tune tomorrow afternoon.

Jeez, talk about brain flatulence…Ray Tolbert was a basketball player.

Matt Tolbert is the baseball player.
