Three Swishes – The Last One Bad

Posted by Steve Lombardi on May 20th, 2009 · Comments (18)

Below is Nick Swisher’s 2009 season, to date, with the bat – in terms of his first 49 Plate Appearances this season, his last 49 Plate Appearances this season, and the 57 Plate Appearances in between those two snapshots:

G PA HR RBI	BB SO	BA OBP SLG
13 49	4 11	6 10 .333 .429 .810

G PA HR RBI	BB SO	BA OBP SLG
13 57	3 8	12 14 .227 .404 .477

G PA HR RBI	BB SO	BA OBP SLG
12 49	1 3	7 16 .125 .250 .225

Hey, remember, I warned you, about 5 weeks ago, that this could be coming.

Seeing this trend, I wonder how those sales of “Swisher 33″ T-shirts at the Stadium will be doing next month? And, I’m also starting to wonder if it won’t be long before the Yankees starting outfield becomes Johnny Damon in left, Brett Gardner and/or Austin Jackson in center, and Melky Cabrera in right.

And, if that happens, will Swisher pout the way that he did in Chicago last season?

Idk if anybody has noticed this, but i’ve watched a lot of Swish at bats and he seems to never get fastballs anymore. He gets a very high percentage of breaking pitches and especially changeups. A lot of pitchers have wasted a fastball inside or off the plate, then throw him changeups which he can’t sit back on and strikes out.

I was really hoping by now that he’d be able to make an adjustment but he hasn’t, and it really looks like he can use a day off some time soon. Either way, something has to change because this has been a very large slump he’s been in.

What I am noticing is Swish has become SHORT PORCH HAPPY… Fast balls away he wants to pull, breaking balls away he wants to pull… Swish, a little bit of advise…. Just go with the the pitch.. HR will come when your hitting the ball hard.. You don’t need to carry this team.. Just get on base and get your BA back up… Thats your value here in NY…

An OF of Gardner and melky together would be horrendous.

There are plenty of power righty bats out there for RF and cheap.

I was hoping Nate McLouth would be part of this team this year.. A true corner OF… lets hope this time around, when the Pirates call up McCutchen (the other on and not the pitcher) Nate becomes available and Cashman takes the offer the Pirates asked for back in November… Just my thoughts on it……

    McLouth plays center, no?

He does yes.. Won a Gold Glove too.. But his natural position is a Left Field.. Although he has played right too…

So everybody has given up on Swisher already? That was quick.

Who said that? All I said was he needs to make an adjustment, and a day off wouldn’t hurt him.

Got off to a hot start.. Is having the time of his life in NY.. Nice role player who IMO is making the most of it slump or no slump at the present time.. I am certainly not giving up on him.. I still think right now he is pressing.. Just needs to go back to the things that made him successful earlier.. He will break out of it soon enough..

It don’t mean much, but I was at the game Monday night, and Swisher hit 3 ball quite hard with nothing to show for it. I had hoped he was coming out of hi slump, but not yet, I guess.

    =====
i don’t see him pressing at all, he hits hard out, and takes called strike 3’s…if he was pressing, he’d be rolling outside pitches to second ala cano

You are right, my bad. I just saw a discussion about candidates to replace him by trade, so that suggested to me that some people were giving up on him. But not everybody, so my bad.

Good point Corey.. I should clarify my definition of pressing as not only defined as you put it but not reacting to the pitch where it is thrown.. He has hit it hard but I see him pulling off the ball at times.. Taking a call strike three also leads me to believe he is starting to look only in certain parts of the zone and not allowing his instincts to hit it where its pitched.. IE,, going to the opposite field.. just my thoughts on it…

i think he believes that his eye is so good that he doesn’t have to protect the plate when he has 2 strikes, which is blasphemy

That was my impression from watching the game on TV. He hit a few balls really hard but right at fielders. Although he’s striking out too, at least he’s not rolling over on balls like Matsui/Cano do when they’re going bad. At least he’s putting solid wood on ‘em.
