Jonah Keri makes a case for it. (H/T to BBTF.)
Betcha, if it happens, we don’t see it until something like 2025. No way it happens without great debate, etc.
What do you think?

you think they would stop retiring numbers if he makes it? Think about it, that would be him, Mo, and Jeter they would have to retire. Pretty soon the numbers on their back will go to alphanumeric

if they retire posadas #, how do they not retire 51 and 21?? tough question
June 3rd, 2009 at 11:37 am
i was sayin posada’s # if he makes the HoF

There will be plenty of #’s left…just not attractive, lower ones like 2, 3, 4, 8. Players will just have to go higher. Somebody’s gotta wear 99 right?

Funny, because I was just telling a buddy the other day that if they made one for #91, I’d proudly sport an “Ace” shirt around town.

I think I read somewhere that he wears 91 b/c he is Dennis Rodman fan. Weird.

I know, im just wondering though…would anyone else make the argument that 21 or 51 could be retired?? especially if 20 gets retired…im not saying any of them definitely should

51 should be, in my book, Bernie is my favorite baseball player of all time. But I like the idea of reducin the # of retired #’s, and i would guess limiting it to HoFers would be 1 way to do so. (I would take bernie over posada anyday on my team in their respective hay-days)

no lie, I liked me some Rodman. Of the court stuff aside, nobody outworked rodman ever…tough as nails that dude

what about oneill though? i know he wasnt a lifetime yankee, but neither was reggie…oneill did alot for that team and was arguably the mvp of that team (alongside jeter and bernie, and mo). Just a thought, i agree it is tough to retire all these numbers, but the idea of retiring Posada’s number makes me think more about the possibility of bernie and paulie too. PLus if they arent going to give out 21 and 51 then why not just officially honor the guys and retire the numbers.

they did give out 21 already, remember last year?

@ Corey:
Haha yeah how long did that last though, 2 weeks? The fans booed until it was switched. Thats even more reason they wont give it out any time soon unless its a perennial all star coming in who takes it (and even then there will be controversy)

I feel about Posada the way I feel about Bernie, O’Neill, and Mattingly…
…love you all to pieces. Not quite Hall of Famers. Just missed.
