Wild Thought: Phil Of The Future Best Served From The Pen? SNY New York Baseball Today Video
Jun 09

Please consider taking the following poll:

Sparky Lyle and Mariano Rivera were famous "one pitch" closers for the Yankees. Lyle threw his slider on just about every pitch and Rivera almost exclusively throws a cut fastball. In terms of quality, which pitcher's "one-pitch" in your opinion was a more unhittable pitch?

A slice of how good these two were, in their prime, as closers for the Yankees…

Mo’s excellence in the post-season tips the scales in his favor. His h/9 drops to 5.5 vs. Sparky’s 7.2. Plus, Sparky never even pitched in the ‘78 World Series after a mediocre ALCS (was he injured?). Sparky was great, no question. But he’s no Mo.

  5. MJ Says:

I never saw Lyle pitch either.

Also, I can’t even imagine what it would be like throwing nothing but sliders. How did Lyle even have an elbow after his career ended?

me neither, so I shouldn’t have voted. But I still voted for Mo.
