Remind me again how much the season's means in the final standings and the postseason; maybe we can retroactively award the 2006 ALDS and AL pennant to the Yanks instead of the Tigers, and the 2008 AL East and pennant to the Yanks instead of the Rays

Although this game was certainly by no means season ending, it was absolutely demoralizing. After AJ gave up that dinger to Big Sloppy and he took a curtain call, I went temporarily insane. I understand that AJ has only pitched 12 games, but at this point it doesn't look like he can rise to the occasion when we need him to.

First, A.J. Burnett centers a fat fastball to David “I’m batting .197 and only have two homers on June 9th”

That's even more of a reason to try and pump one past him, no?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Until the Yankees show that they can beat the Red Sox you cannot take them seriously as a pennant contender.

2008 Yanks went 9-9 against the Sox, and 11-7 against the Rays. Were they a serious pennant contender last year?

Oh, come on, folks. Try to keep a wide view. A sample size of six games is not predictive. Yes, it sucks they've lost those six games, but they tell us next to nothing about what they're going to do over the course of the season or in the playoffs, against the Red Sox or anyone else. And they will beat the Red Sox sometime this year. Just relax.

As for Burnett, a sample size of 12 games is not predictive. Yes, he's been disappointing thus far. But it's way too early to lump him in with the likes of Carl Pavano and Kei Igawa. His ERA is about a run higher than his career number, so we can expect it to come down a bit. That said, he will remain inconsistent, just as he's always been. But he will also be occasionally dominating. That's a solid, if frustrating, number three, or even number two, starter. What he's getting paid has nothing to do with anything. He is what he is, last night's clunker aside.

And yes, Butchie, sample size. Sample size, sample size, sample size. Being annoyed over last night's game is perfectly understandable. It annoys me, too. But one game does not a season make. All it tells us is that the Yankees played poorly last night. Nothing else.

I told you so! To quote MJ: AJ Burnout is Shit! Only joking about that. Burnout was a pitcher that was pitching in the AL East and did well aganst Boston BUT he was pitching in a low pressure situation when pitching for the Jays. It's a hockey town, where even when the baseball team did well this year they still drew half of what the Yankees draw with the exception of Doc Halladay's starts. The way he's done in these Red Pox starts has been awful. His comments after the game were ridiculous.as well. I wanted this guy to do well but his track record of pitching to an almost 5 ERA last year and the fact he was dominant against two teams last year(the Yanks and the Red Sox).and so-so against everyone else brings up a bunch of red flags. Either the Yankee scouts didn't bother to watch the games he pitched against other teams OR the Yanks just fell in love with a Yankee killer yet again.....

@ Justin. Sample size?HAHAHAHAHAH, sample size you say? The Yanks have lost all 6 games they have played against the Red Sox this year, can you make a sample size statement when they at least win one against them? C'mon, mate they have to beat the Red Sox to at least show that they can. If they face them in the playoffs and the Red Sox have made mincemeat with them in the regular season, what message have the Yankees sent?

@ Steve, when Boston got the Mango Tree Man, Shill the Shrill and Beckshitt they exercised better pitcher evaluation. even after Beckeshitt's less than stellar first season with the Red Sox, Theo stuck with him wisely enough. If that was Cash Man, Beckshitt would have been traded away for somebody else's aging veteran.

@MJ, we finally agreed on something besides Assmouth Papelbone! I do think that every lit bit does count, so winning games against teams in the division are important but especially Boston. As I've said earlier in the season, I think Boston is a better team than the Yankees. These games are exposing the strengths of the Red Sox and the weaknesses of the Yankees. The Yanks should win one against the Red Sox, probably the CC game. If they don't,then the Yanks are proving my point about which team is better head to head. Also, it is confounding to me that the Yanks haven't at least won one game yet against the Red Sox........
