Joba is nothing special yet as a starter. As a reliever he was unhittable.Lets see Hughes play bavk to back games before saying crazy things.

Yeah, he has a huge sample as a reliever. He was going to sustain numbers as a reliever better than Mo, while he will never improve from his awful 3.19 ERA as a starter.

I think hughes is an excellent temporary option for the bullpen and i think he should be used there as long as the rotation is healthy. Hughes is young and will eventually be a starter, but if his biggest value to this team is in the pen then why send him to the minors just to log his innings in hope that he helps them next year. Even Cone said last night that if he was needed to fill in as a starter for an injury it wouldnt be hard to stretch him back out to 80-100 pitches. If that is the case, they must keep him in the bullpen bc it seems he will be valuable there.

Id love to see him on the mound tonight in the bottom of the 9th protecting a 2 run lead haha

if he shows he can't be a starter, it's a nice fallback option. but since he still has a great chance to be a starter, no way. need to build up his innings so he's ready to take a rotation spot at 180 innings next year, which means 140-150 this year.

totally agreed with all that i hope this debate doesn't become as silly and widespread as joba. a lot of good starters can be relievers. but you have to give them the chance to start first. joba and phil have not gotten that full chance yet for any sort of extended period of time. the only reason this debate rages with the yankees is because joba and now phil have been used as relievers. that doesn't make it any better. if lester worked out of relief, or cain, or garza, or whoever, they'd be effective as well. but since we haven't seen it we don't talk about it. just because we've seen it with these two isn't a good enough reason to me to be talking about it.

if hughes can show me he can pitch like last night on the regular every 5 days i'll sign up for that. But, I think that he was givin it a little extra outta the pen, and if thats what it takes for him to pitch like that...maybe thats what's needed.

No. It makes more sense than Joba, just bacause of the 4 pitches vs. 2 pitches that you note. However, Hughes’ cutter looks pretty solid as a third offering, and he has shown this year, in spurts, that he has the talent to be a top starter. If, when Mo retires, Hughes has still failed to establish himself, I would possibly reconsider. Maybe.

Exactly...makes more sense than the Joba argument, but I still think you have to let him prove without a doubt that he can't be an effective starter before you move him to the bullpen. He's far from that point.

No, no, no...please don't start this talk. We're going to be forever plagued with the idiotic talks of Joba being put in the pen (seriously, he'll need to go 35-0 every year for the rest of his career to stop this crap), please let's not spread any words of Hughes being in the pen as well.
