  • Sherman: Yanks No-Go On Halladay

    Posted by on July 9th, 2009 · Comments (6)

Joel Sherman tweets that “Yankee officials tell me zero chance on Halladay for same reason no Santana 2 yrs back: Combo of too many prospects/dollars.”

Now, does that mean the Blue Jays want too many prospects and Halladay makes too many dollars? Or, does it mean that the Yankees don’t have enough prospects to offer Toronto and not enough money to pay Halladay? I guess it depends on your view, no?

Since two years ago the yankees had enough to get Santana im certain its the same this year. The yankees could eaislty put togeather a package but i guess they dont feel hes worth Montero/A Jax/Hughes/Joba combination with the money on top. I tend to agree. Halladays aint no spring chicken he already 32 and is gonna want an extension

I’m betting that for a trade within the division, the Jays would demand Hughes or Chamberlain PLUS Montero, plus 2 other good prospects, possibly lower level.

The statement the team official gave Sherman may just be the Opening Move. The Yanks deny real interest, and maintain that stance until the Rays, O’s or Red Sox make a real offer.

I don’t see how the Yanks could possibly let the Sox get him; the prospect of faciing Beckett, Halladay and Lester in a crucial 3-game series, or the ALCS is a nightman scenario.

the yankees have more than enough to get him, and could do it 5 different ways. most teams do. it’s just a matter of what team is prepared to take the hit of what they have to give up, which will be just massive. teams that are 16 games over at the half-way point are less likely to want to take that hit, because it weakens them in other areas and they are already good.

related, evan put it well calling boston getting him a “nightmare”. the yankees should just do enough to keep him away from boston. it would be unreal to have him, but we’d have to give away too many pieces that are also critical to us winning now + prospects with real upside (montero, a-jax).

The long-term implications of a deal for Halladay are troubling. It isn’t so much the prospects (other than Montero), but Doc will want an extension and the team has several long-term contracts that will force it to pay top dollar for players past their prime from 2013 onward. To add another would compromise any roster flexibility.

If the Jays actually go thorugh with this trade, it would be extremely unlikely that Doc would go to the Red Sox or the Yankees. JP Retardi would have to have 24-7 protection after such a trade! But for argument’s sake, the Yankees would have to give up Ajax, Hughes, Joba, Brackman,Montero and two other prospects to get that done. That’s what JP would want from the yanks, something that over the top. The Red Sox have more quality position player prospects so that give them an edge because the Jays have tons of pitching prospects. In the end , if Doc is traded I can’t see it to those two teams because Toronto fans are already pissed off at Retardi and the ownership for the BS, promises and a Halladay trade would be devastating BUT to their most hated rivals….the crowds at the Skydome would look emptier than Landshark/Marlins Stadium!

As great as Halladay is, I really don’t see a team in the AL East getting him unless they eat Wells’ contract too. I can’t really see them doing a salary dump of Wells contract because he will be owed so much for the remainder of the contract and it would be stupid to take such a mediocre player. and as I’ve said yesterday, wells is the antithesis of Gillick’s winning player hypothesis! The Yanks need winners and more productive players not underachieving, overpaid losers like Wells OR even Rios for that matter.
