Yanks OTD MIA
Some of the notable and should-have-been-available guys missing the action at today’s Old Timer’s Day at the new Yankee Stadium:
Bernie Williams, Tommy John, Paul O’Neill, Ed Figueroa, Dave Winfield, David Wells, Tino Martinez, Jim Abbott, Mike Pagliarulo, Jim Kaat, Wade Boggs, Kei Igawa, Scott Brosius, Chuck Knoblauch, and David Justice…
O.K., I’m kidding about the Kei Igawa part…
But, no Bernie, Tino, Boomer or the Warrior? What’s up with that?
(And, I’m not forgetting guys like Don Mattingly, Willie Randolph, Chris Chambliss, Lou Piniella, Roberto Kelly, Dave Righetti, Sparky Lyle, Tim Raines and Mike Torrez. I left them off because they have jobs that would not allow them to be there. Roger Clemens? Well, if you gotta ask…)

Isn’t Bernie touring right now for his new CD? I know O’neill said he had a trip scheduled before the Yanks decided on the date and could not change his trip. As for Winfield, Wells, and Katt, they all have TV commitments. Winfield with ESPN, Wells with TBS, and Katt is calling Red Sox games on NESN. As for the others I am not sure why they didn’t show.
I didn’t miss any of ‘em.
Hey, if you want to be a Yankees living legend, then you better get your fanny to OTD…that’s all I am saying…
…and that means making sure your calendar is open for weekends in July.
and Katt is calling Red Sox games on NESN.

Wait, WHAT?! I thought he retired from YES broadcasts because he wanted to spend time on the road with his wife in their RV? When did he take the NESN job? Wow, I’m seriously crushed by this. He was my favorite TV guy.

That is correct. She died, he remarried, he’s been working for a while now.
steve had a post on this, Kaat wanted to come back to YES and YES decided he was too expensive (or something like that)
Kaat is also a regular broadcaster on mlb network games as well
I’m between heartbroken and furious. I can’t believe Kitty Kaat is working for NESN while the Yanks continue to employ that schmuck Michael Kay.

It’s not difficult to believe when you consider Kay’s shtick. He and Sterling and Waldman are Yankee homers, so it’s not surprising that they will be around for a while.
Sterling has gotten a lot more pompous and corny, I would say he’s near unlistenable at this point.
Katt is filling in for Jerry Remy while he recovers from cancer. I am not sure how long Katt will be doing the games. The Sox have been rotating in announcers all year.

Sterking and waldman are worse than Kay. Kay has the radio show to balance things out. with Sterling, you get the closest thing to Hawk Harrelson(White Sox announcer who calls the ChiSox games who calles then THE GOOD GUYS!). There is a camp element to the Yankee games which wore its welcome out years ago. Raf, I can’t even listen to them on the radio save the Daily News Fifth where they bring in Mc Laren or Feinsand otherwise it’s not really appointment radio.
Raf – Kaat remarried, really?
@ Steve Lombardi:
that seems like he remarried really fast to me, if he did that is
I realize I’m in the minority here, but I actually enjoy Kay, Sterling, and Waldman. Thats most likely due to the fact that I live in Florida. Up until last year when I obtained XM Radio and the Extra Innings package, the only Yankee game commentary I heard was done by Rays, White Sox (WGN), and ESPN commentators. Believe me. When you’ve had 15 years of those douche bags, the sight/sound of the above mentioned Yankee commentators is like heaven. Not that I dont notice some of their flaws (It is high, it is far, it is…caught at the wall. I hate that!) I guess most of you have just been listening longer and have got tired of said flaws.

Yes he did. The Hall of Fame Classic @ Cooperstown was part of his honeymoon, IIRC.
edit: I just looked it up
From the Bronx Banter Blog
Markusen: Let’s talk about yourself. You mentioned the passing of your previous wife, MaryAnn. But this is a great week for you. You’re now newly married [as of earlier this week] and I guess this is your honeymoon here in Cooperstown.
Kaat: Yeah, it really is. It kind of came out of the blue, it was such a surprise to Margie and I. She’s a golf pro—I met her five or six years ago and used to say hello to her occasionally at this breakfast spot, and I would see her at some golf functions—but I never saw any kind of a romantic interest there. But we had mutual friends in Philadelphia who said, ‘We think we have the perfect match for you.’ And they were right. It was a whirlwind romance, and we’re both just thrilled. And, you know, I continue to honor MaryAnn. I’ve started a fund and we’ve put lights on a little league field back in my hometown in her memory. Margie had a similar experience in her life. So we honor [those we’ve lost]. But we’re just very happy together.
Markusen: So Margie’s at the Otesaga Hotel with you this weekend. That’s a good place to be.
Kaat: Yes, it is. We got married in Bedington, Vermont, which is her hometown. She and her dad and her brother were at the game [the Hall of Fame Classic] today. And that’s, of course, a short drive from Cooperstown. So, the Otesaga is not a bad place to hang out.

Sterling has gotten really bad as of late. He was always pompous and bombastic, but at least Kay was somewhat able to keep him in check. IIRC Joe Angel wanted to kill him.

Thanks. I had no idea. (Sorry Bruce – missed that one!)
I don’t know how lodging runs up there, but you should check out the classic if you get the opportunity, Steve
