A question – I missed Saturday’s telecast. Someone told me that the YES booth was talking about mistakes that Cashman admitted to…around the batting cage during BP before the game…and one of them was not trading for Miguel Cabrera when he had the chance.

This true? Anyone else hear it? What other mistakes were confessed?

I missed Saturday’s telecast as well and had no idea that the Yanks could’ve acquired Miguel Cabrera.

Then again, where would Cabrera be playing? A-Rod’s entrenched at 3B and I’d much rather have Teixeira at 1B than Cabrera. Sure, he could be DH’ing but considering what he’s making in Detroit, that’s an awful lot of money to be paying a full-time DH (especially when you consider what the Yanks would’ve had to eat to dump Matsui and Giambi to make it work).

If I remember correctly, wasn’t Cabrera available at around the same time the A-Rod had opted out? Is Cashman saying he’d prefer to have traded for Cabrera so at to be able to let A-Rod go at that time?

    4. July 22nd, 2009 | 9:58 am

I wonder if the Yanks had traded for Miguel Cabrera before 2008, would they have let A-Rod walk?

The Marlins traded Cabrera on December 4, 2007.
And, A-Rod started meeting with Hank on November 15, 2007.
      It’s close on the timing.
Maybe if Hank had let A-Rod walk, Cashman would have traded for Cabrera? Perhaps that is what Cashman meant, in terms of it being a mistake to let him slip?

if miguel cabrera would have been our third baseman last year, we might’ve had the worst defense ever

    6. July 22nd, 2009 | 10:21 am

Girardi had him at 3rd in the past and seemed OK with it.

    7. July 22nd, 2009 | 10:22 am

That said, I agree, Cabrera is a butcher at third.

      It seems possible although:

      (1) I doubt Cashman would’ve been OK with having Cabrera play 3B since the Tigers made Cabrera their 1B the moment he walked in the door due to his lousy defense at 3B;
      (2) It would’ve been an awful gamble to let A-Rod walk without a deal for Cabrera already in the bag;
      (3) Who’s to say that the Yanks could’ve even made such a trade considering how reluctant they were to trade prospects in other deals recently (namely the Santana negotiations); and
      (4) Mercifully, the Yanks didn’t get stuck with Dontrelle Willis too. That poor kid’s career is over.

That was long ago and far away. Cabrera seemed to be an AL player even with his last year with Florida. Someone that huge and “unrangey” was/is a DH in the waiting. If the Yanks got him , they would have let Arod walk no doubt. Quite frankly, the Yanks have too many DH types as it is…that was a mistake? Did Cash Man mention the obvious like Igawa or Pavano to the Yankee booth guys or to anyone around BP?

Recalling a thread not too long ago about the Yanks being owned by young pitchers, found this interesting from the Globe:

“Tonight, Hunter will become the 24th rookie starting pitcher to face the Sox this season. Rookie starters have a 7-14 record and a 5.47 ERA against the Sox this season. But some of them have proved baffling, especially recently.

Since June 19, rookie starters have beaten the Sox five times, and that does not include the game in Baltimore, when Orioles rookie Brad Bergesen held the Sox to one run over eight innings, then watched them come back after he exited. ”

(Make it 8-14 after last night) This article supports the position that although 8-14 is not dominant, it’s humiliating every time kid comes in and they can’t figure him out. Interesting – it’s not just the Yanks, who BTW get a shot at another rookie tonight.

4-0, Yanks, in the bottom of the 1st today.

Man, I know that the O’s, in about two to three years from now, are supposed to be a much better team, but…Holy Cow!…they REALLY suck now…major league suck…and then some…

Red Sox traded for 1B Adam LaRoche of the Pirates:

      http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4348069

I’m not sure I get what this really addresses? He’s a career .249/.308/.435 (.743 OPS) vs. LHP and .275/.347/.500 (.847 OPS) vs. RHP. I guess that makes Mark Kotsay expendable which is a good move but it’s not like LaRoche is really going to play that much with Youk entrenched at 1B and Big “Floppi” (h/t Butchie) as the DH.

And, despite that, I’d take Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Matt Weiters over their NYY counterparts in a heartbeat. And not only because they’re cost-effective but because they’re better.

Not impossible, given his recent DL stint. I guess that means LaRoche to 1B full time and Youk back across the diamond to 3B.

The Pirates are such a weird team. Yes, Adam LaRoche was arbitration-eligible and would probably get paid in the $8M range next year but how do the Pirates continue to get so little for their MLB assets? It only cost Boston a AA shortstop from their 40-man roster (Argenis Diaz) who seems to be a lightweight at the plate (1210 MiLB AB’s, .4HR, 273/.327/.355).

      @ MJ:
I don’t really see where he fits either, but LaRoche throughout his career is a completely different second half player. Maybe they’re banking on that trend to continue? Doesn’t seem like they gave up much, so it’s a low-risk move.

Better than Austin Jackson, Brett Gardner and Jesus Montero? :-)

      ———-
Absolutely. Adam Jones’s ceiling was always projected higher than AJax’s and he gets bonus points for already breaking out in 2009 whereas we don’t yet know how AJax will do in the bigs in 2010. Weiters is a defensive standout whereas Montero may not stick behind the plate.

The smiley face at the end of your comment says it all about Brett Gardner. He’s a 4th OF in my opinion.

Anyone know where I can get video clips of Jeter’s “The Flip” in 2001 and ‘The Catch” into the stands vs Boston? Doing a speech in speech class about Jeter’s greatness.

It makes Kotsay expendable, he backs up Lowell and Youk. If Youk shifts to 3rd, he makes for a decent platoon with Lowell .277/.339/.458 (.797 OPS) vs RHP. I don’t think he’s a pull hitter, so he should do well in Fenway.

Something else that should be noted is that he’s a .296/.357/.544 (.901 OPS) for the 2nd half of the season.
