How Much Is That Halladay In The Window?
Via Jayson Stark -
If the Blue Jays’ asking price for Roy Halladay is J.A. Happ, top pitching prospect Kyle Drabek and high-ceiling outfield prospect Dominic Brown, the Phillies aren’t buying.
The Blue Jays had formally proposed that package to the Phillies on Thursday, in exchange for the 32-year-old Cy Young award-winner, ESPN’s Peter Gammons confirmed Friday.
But two baseball people familiar with the Phillies’ thinking told ESPN.com on Saturday that that’s not a deal the Phillies are willing to make.
“The ball is in their court,” said Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi, who Friday did not sound optimistic that a deal would happen.
According to an executive of one team that has spoken with the Phillies’ brass, the Phillies are adamantly opposed to giving up both Happ and Drabek. There are indications they would like to substitute pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco for one of those two, preferably in place of the highly regarded Drabek.
If it’s true that the Jays asked the Phils for J.A. Happ, Kyle Drabek and Dominic Brown in exchange for Roy Halladay, then maybe the Yankees should offer Toronto Austin Romine, Wilkins DeLaRosa, Mark Melancon and Alfredo Aceves…and see if they bite?
Sure, it’s a package that doesn’t have the value of J.A. Happ, Kyle Drabek and Dominic Brown; but, it’s not that far off, is it? Given what we know, what would you offer the Blue Jays for Halladay?

“Given what we know, what would you offer the Blue Jays for Halladay?”
Hughes, McAllister, Romine + C-level prospect. Taking into account that JP needs to make a splash with this deal to possibly save his job, trading within their division, and to the yankees.
I just don’t see how the yanks could do it without including joba/hughes. It’s hard to give up on them after seeing hughes take off in the setup role and joba coming around the last two starts
1- I don’t want the Yankees to trade for Doc. (see recent long thread on this topic)
2- The Jays need to get real if they truly want to trade the guy. Young talent in general, and especially young pitching, is highly valued in today’s game (for many reasons). Plus, the team that gets him is only guaranteed 1 1/2 seasons. Unless they are negotiating and know that they will take less than what they have asked for then they are either unrealistic or would like to just keep him.
McAllister is on the DL, no?
does it matter that he is on the 7 day DL?
I think McAllister, Melancon, and Romine plus 1 or 2 more prospects would be a good package. Put it out there and let the Blue Jays take it or make a counter offer. Let’s face it the Blue Jays are falling way out of contention this year, and the Yanks, Sox, and Rays are not going away next year, so it might be time for them to unload Halladay, Rolen, and Rios and get 8-10 solid prospects back.
Steve, I’m not sure where you got your prospect info or if it is old. I’m pretty sure all 3 Phillies guys listed are more highly regarded than any of the Yankees you were willing to give up. A more similar deal might be Hughes, Jackson, and Romine.
Any deal with the Yanks starts with Hughes, Joba, Ajax THEN add in Montero, Brackman maybe Coke. JP would have to wear a bulletproof vest if he traded to the Yankees or Red Sox. So if he trades to them , he has to rip them off/hurt them in the process because he is trading the face of the franchise to the two most hated team of Jays’ fans. I still think the Red Sox have a better shot SINCE JP lives in Massachussetts even during the baseball season, he grew up a Red Sox fan(his kids are Sox fans), he is close with Theo and the Sox front office and he would never hear the end of it from his people in Mass. AsI’ve said before the Red Sox have those position prospects that Toronto needs and the Yankees are relatively not as strong as. I go to Toronto on business a few times a year and it is funny to hear not only how even if JP traded Halladay for the best deal to the Bosox or the Yanks, they would go apeshit. Heyman had something about them not trading Doc in division because of the irate nature of Jays fans. Jp already alienated them with his inability to craft a better moustrap in the AL East for 8 years and they don’t wanna see the face of their franchise playing for “the enemy” so to speak. Like I had said, would any Yankee fan have wanted Donnie Baseball traded to that dominant Toronto team of the early 90s when the Yankees were rebuilding? HELL NO! He didn’t get a chance to be in the playoffs like Doc hasn’t BUT I never wanted to see Donnie Ballgame traded, even if the Yanks got back the jewels of Toronto’s farm system.
In additon,Any Yankee fan that wants to trade Hughes and Joba as part of a deal for Doc needs to think again. Why weaken the bullpen when Hughes has excelled this season? Yeah, Joba is a work in progress but this kid still has so much of an upside. In the end, I wouldn’t be surprised if Doc doesn’t get traded at all since Retardi is so hated by the fanbase up there. In the end, it is Philly’s trade to foul up and if they get Halladay and the Jays get 4 or 5 of Drabek, Marson, Brown,Taylor,Knapp or Happ they’ve both got something good out of this trade. @ Yagotta, good call on the Phightin Phils prospects BTW!
