Seriously, Steve, we've been over this. Cashman was wise not to give Wang the extension. He prepared for the season by going eight deep in starting pitchers within the organization, including Hughes, Aceves, and Kennedy at AAA, and that isn't even counting Mitre (who I see as the second coming of Sidney Ponson). There is a limit to how many capable starting pitchers an organization can sign before a season starts, and many teams scrape the bottom of the barrel (see Smoltz in Boston) after a few injuries.

So the real issue is what Cashman does now as the trading deadline approaches, with many teams still in contention for wild card slots and therefore looking for pitching help.

Nice alliteration.

Anyway, I'm not going to sweat it; as noted in the linked thread,
"I look around the major leagues, and I see other GMs counting on pitchers who came into the season with pitchers in the rotation who they also knew had some physical problems, some even known to be having some question or problem with their pitching arms, pitchers whose injuries/performance have hurt their team. For example:

The Diamondbacks and Brandon Webb.
The Angels and Ervin Santana and Kelvim Escobar.
The Mariners and Erik Bedard (it’s always SOMETHING with Bedard)
The Twins and Francisco Liriano.
The Tigers and Jeremy Bonderman.
The Mets and John Maine.
The Marlins and Anibal Sanchez.
The Cubs and Rich Harden (who/s hurt every season)."

Also should be noted that John Smoltz got lit up again.

name me one team in baseball that wouldn't have done the same exact thing...in fact I'll put my money on most teams extending him.

I have asked this question over and over and over again and I never get a response. Who do you want to be the general manager of the Yankees?
