So, the Yankees head into Tampa today for a three game set with the Rays – and New York has their three hard-throwers in the rotation set up to pitch this one (meaning Burnett, Sabathia and Chamberlain).
This leads to today’s wild thought: What if the Rays take it to A.J., CC and Joba and sweep the Yankees in this one – putting themselves just 4 games back, in the loss column, behind the Yankees.
Will New York just shrug it off, and move on to their next series, or, would a sweep by Tampa (against the Yankees stud starters) set off all kinds of crazy things in Yankeeland that will mean bad news for the team? What do you think?

Both. The optimists will shrug it off and look ahead, and the pessimists will freak out and call the season done. This happens with pretty much every loss we have.

they’ll probably just move on. just like they did when they went 21-8 after losing 4 in a row at home to boston and tampa in early may. just like they did when they went 25-12 after getting swept in boston in early june. just like they did when they went 9-1 after getting swept in anaheim in mid july. sweeps happen, you just regroup, no matter what time of year it is.

personally I could see that forcing the yankees to go after a better starter before the deadline (i think they are going for a 5th starter type no matter what due to CMW’s injury and Joba’s innings limit)

I’ll think they’ll get that 5th starter regardless of the outcome of the Tampa series. If CC, AJ, and Joba cant get it done, we have bigger problems than a 5th starter.

@ clintfsu813:
joba has an innings limit

@ Corey:
Exactly why I think we’ll get a 5th even if we sweep Tampa.

lol ya i agree, thats why i said exactly that, but i feel they will go after a better pitcher then a potential 5th starter if they get swept by the rays

I see your point. I would hope they wouldnt freak out like that..but wouldnt be surprised either, lol

It would be disastrous. It would put all the more pressure on the upcoming series against the Sox. It would definitely put doubt in players’ heads. And that leads to losing. Just look at the record after the the most recent swept series against the Sox.
The bigger and IMHO more realistic question is how would the Rays respond to a sweep or even losing 2 of 3? They have not been playing at the level of NY and BOS and they could take a big step out of contention.
