• The Passing Of John Hughes

    This is sad news.

Mr. Mom, Vacation, Nate and Hayes, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Home Alone, and Dutch were all fun movies. And, that’s just a slice of the pie when it comes to John Hughes resume.

Fifty-nine is way too young an age to go. What a shame.

      Agreed.

I love most of those movies and I consider Breakfast Club on par with The Catcher in the Rye as two of the best pieces of adolescence in art ever created. That movie is sheer genius.

Never a big fan of his. He did the santized version of the teen exploitation flick. He had a sort of ethos in some of his films, I found unentertaining. @ MJ ,you are comparing Hughes to Salinger? C’mon, mate give me a bloody break….Maybe I should start comparing Spielberg to Dickens…not!

I must admit that Weird Science is a guilty pleasure though. Yeah, it was goofy, stupid BUT fun. And Kelly Le Brock was in it! She couldn’t act BUT man was she hot. Vacation was something else ,too. I never took to Ducky, though and didn’t buy Molly Ringwald as some kind of hottie(she was a nottie,a portmantaeu of not and hottie!). Oh well to each his own…..

Go back and re-read what I wrote. I’m comparing “The Breakfast Club” to “The Catcher in the Rye.”

Both works portray teen angst, sexuality and issues of conformity in society. I’m not the first one to draw the parallel between the two and if you can’t see the similarities or the social relevance in each one well, “mate”, as Steve says, “your mileage may vary.”

      @ Corey:
Vegas Vacation was underrated in my opinion. I was a big fan of the whole Nick Papagiorgio bit.

      @ Corey:
No, but it was still pretty good. They finally made the daughter hot, and I loved the part of the old gambler passing out and leaving them the winning ticket. Also the…I put in a quarter, I got a car. I put in a quarter, I got a car..etc.

My condolences to Phil. I know this is a big series, but he should be with his family this weekend.
