The Sound Of Music

Two sounds that I never get tired of hearing: The popping of a mitt and the crack of the bat.
I know that many like to use the sound of a bubbling fountain, falling rain, crashing surf, chirping birds, and such, for relaxation and stress relief. But, me…gimmie the sound of a popping of a mitt and the crack of the bat…every time. How about you?

that’s certainly the best part of spring for me
The sound of a good fastball popping into a catcher’s glove is seriously awesome. My favorite thing to do at MiLB parks is to go stand by the bullpen to listen for that sound. Although he completely sucked, Royce Ring of the ’04 B-Mets (AA) had the best-sounding fastball I’ve ever heard. I suppose he sucked because it only “sounded” good and was never actually good.
My favorite sound was always a combo.
Being behind the plate, a combination of a good 90+ mph fastball hitting your mitt and the whiff and wave sound of a bat coming through the zone and completely missing it was always sweet music to my ears.
I very much miss that sound.
Ol Blue Eyes after the 9th. That is all.

Nice one!

Spoken like a true ex-catcher, bro!
Although baseball is my favorite sport, I played 5 years in the NFL and college + the XFL (won the championship) and there nothing like hitting someone and hearing that last gasp of air!

Mondoas, that’s AWESOME! The funny thing is that I actually watched the whole season of the XFL so I probably know who you are!
O.K., true confession here: I’ve been a baseball fan since 1973 and have seen some incredible, wonderful, thrilling and moving things in the game. And, I played some form of “ball” from 1973 to 1988 and had more than my share of great experiences doing that…
Now, that said, to this day, one of my biggest thrills in sports was the very first time I returned a kick-off for a TD. (And, I really didn’t play all that much football as a kid – it was mostly from 1977 to 1988.)
It’s hard to describe, but, it was just something about THAT MOMENT when you realized you just beat 11 guys chasing you, and there’s nothing between you and the end zone…what I remember most is beating the LAST guy, hearing him say “Oh, shit!” when he knew that I beat him, and no one else had a play, and that I was going all the way. I thought my lungs were going to explode when I crossed the goal line.
Kinda weird for a baseball nut like me to confess this – but, it’s true. Go figure.
Anyway, the point is, I can appreciate and respect someone saying that another sport offers the sound, etc. But, I dunno…there’s just something about the sounds of mitts popping and bats cracking that’s like music…like listening to bugs on a summer’s night, or the rain hitting a flat roof, that kind of stuff…at least for me.
