That’s not true. Every team can afford to go over slot. The Pittsburgh Pirates — 28th out of 30 in MLB revenue this past season — went heavily over slot for their mid-round draft picks just last week. See MJ, I disagree with the notion that every team team can do it. The bigger market teams have the financial flexibility to take a big risk on a highly coveted first rounder BECAUSE of their deep pockets. I hear what you are saying about the 5-10 mill but some of those team’s profit margins might be razor thin so they can’t afford to pay ,let’s say 3 times over slot for a third rounder.A lot of the middle and small market teams are still skittish of spending money on unproven talent Though, I recently saw Toronto sign draft picks considerably over slot BUT I think they won’t be spending upwards of 100 million anytime soon. The money a team saves on payroll can go towards the draft. And of course, the Nats signed Strasburg for a record 15 miliion. I was surprised BY Kasten’s decision BUT it is a pretty good investment in lieu of the fact that a premiere pitcher like Doc Halladay or Beckhit might cost upwards of 20 mill a year for 5 years.

In terms of Los Metropolitanos, Nomar(No plus Omar) Minaya for some stupid reason didn’t emphasize spending upwards of 3 times slot. A team like the Mets are so pennywise and pound foolish that they are skipping on the essentials. I get the idea that Freddie Coupon is a businessman and etc,BUT why skimp on the draft when they have the means. in the past it was cheapness, NOW it’s Madoff,next thing you know they will blame Willie Randolph for all their bloody problems.

That’s a big problem with the Mets in that they are a big market team. Then again they weren’t going over slot even before Madoff madeoff with 750 million dollars of Wilpon’s fortune. Yeah, they are very few teams that are able to go over slot AND the Mets have been one of them and just look at their system as a result of Freddie Coupon’s ways.

I don’t revel in other team’s debacle BUT the triple play was fun to watch. Just when Jerry Manuel tried something interesting,it backfires! Mind you Bruntlett screwed up two plays before that, in adding insult to injury. The Mets never seem to get a break……
