Add Dellin Betances to the list of Alan Horne, Andrew Brackman, Christian Garcia, Humberto Sanchez, J. Brent Cox, Jason Stephens, Lance Pendleton, Mark Melancon, George Kontos and Brett Marshall. Mike Ashmore has the scoop.

I’m not sure how that compares with other organizations, but I think the reason you go out as an organization and collect so many arms in the minors is because the attrition rate is so high.

The Yanks’ recent draft history tends to support this ‘collect and keep’ philosophy.

In 2009, 24 of 49 players taken were pitchers.
In 2008, 26 of 51 players taken were pitchers.
In 2007, 24 of 50 players taken were pitchers.

And so on… looking at high-end picks, since 2005 the Yankees have made 11 selections in the first two rounds of the draft. Seven of those have been pitchers. If you look back just one more year to the 2004 draft, the ratio goes to 10 pitchers in the first two rounds out of a total of 15 total picks.
