    ...a frog?

Not bird, nor plane, nor even frog, it's just a little 'ole baseball blog!

Just noticed this over at the blog Misc. Baseball – Gathering Assorted Items of Baseball History and Trivia:

On May 27, 1995, exactly four days after Mariano Rivera’s debut, Andy Pettitte made his first big league start. (It’s funny to see that on May 16 ‘95 the Yankees optioned left-hander Andy Pettitte to Class AAA Columbus and to fill his roster spot, they recalled right-hander Mariano Rivera: these two were intertwined from the start in New York.)

It seems like 1995 was a million years ago, no? What were you doing back in May of 1995?

What were you doing back in May of 1995?

      Me?

Working in downtown Manhattan – something I have done in the last 12 years.
Married for 2.5 years – and it will be 17 years for me and the Mrs. next month.
Living in the first house that I owed for 1.5 years – a house that I would live in for 6 years and that I haven’t lived in for the last 9 years and 8 months…

Basically, I was somebody who I barely remember being…now…

Wonder if Mo and Andy feel the same?

      Me?

I was attending classes @ Westchester Community College.
I had a full time gig as a delivery driver @ Dominos Pizza.
Not married but messing around as anyone my age would’ve done (May 1995, I was 20, would’ve turned 21 that Sept)
My aunt was 4 months preggers with her first child
I was still living with my parents
I was puttering around in a 79 Corolla
I attended a few games here and there, but didn’t go to opening day as some sort of protest.
By then, my baseball interest had branched out to other teams besides the Yankees, followed the minors as well.

I was teaching Math at the same school I’m at now.
I was happy about the rise of the Yanks under Stick and Buck.
      My mom was still alive.
I weighed a lot less than I do now.
I was driving a Honda Civic.
I owned my first computer, but used it mostly to play games, and was not doing this, as I had no connection to the internet.
I still bowled in bowling leagues back then.

In most respects, I was the same guy I am now…very boring.

What were you doing back in May of 1995?

      Me?

I was winding down my sophomore year of college out in St. Louis, Missouri.
I was getting ready to say goodbye for the summer to my college girlfriend.
I was two months shy of 20 years old (hey Raf, we’re the same age, apparently).
I had adopted the Cardinals out of convenience because it was hard to follow the Yanks from 1,000 miles away before the internet age.
      I was young and stupid…

I’m sorta the same guy although not as young and a little less stupid :-)

      @ MJ:
      Looks like we’re a year apart…

Living in Mo, I guess you got to see Joe Torre before he became a genius. So what were your thoughts when he was hired after the 95 season?

Honestly? I thought the Yanks totally screwed up. I couldn’t figure out where the appeal was. Then again, back in those days, I thought the manager actually mattered a lot more than he does…
