More than sort of, actually In 1964 Robinson was 27 and en route to winning his 5th Gold Glove. At that juncture he was considered the greatest defensive 3B in history. That season he would also lead the AL in RBIs while finishing 2nd in BA. For a good part of the year the O's were in 1st and everyone said Brooks was MVP, but then the Yankees came on strong down the stretch and passed the Birdies. But people still held to the opinion that Robinson was MVP regardless of where his team finished, and in the end he took something like 19 of the 20 1st place ballots to win the honor easily. I suspect Mauer will win it just as easily.

Sort of like Brooks Robinson in 1964.

</blockquote>
Well, sort of...the main difference being that Mauer is also the best hitter in the league this season as well as a Gold Glove at a key defensive position.

He's the MVP now, even if they don't make it. The Twins are 2 games out with two weeks left. That's close enough.

But that can't be!

The Twins are not a quality opponent.

I know this, because the Yanks are 7-0 against them, and they're included in the "Weak Sister Five" commonly cited as the main reason the Yanks are 41 games over .500.

How could such a disastrously bad team even make the postseason, much less beat the Yanks in the ALDS?
==========================
Because: this is baseball, not football or basketball, and that's why they play the games.
