Via St. Louis Today -
The Cardinals announced today that they terminated the contract of top Dominican prospect Wagner Mateo because of “pre-existing injuries and physical defects” discovered during a physical exam.
Post-Dispatch baseball writer Joe Strauss reported Saturday that Mateo has vision problems.
Mateo, a 16-year-old outfielder, signed a $3.1 million contract in July. But the contract could not go in force until all medical questions were satisfied.
The club had 90 days from Mateo’s July 2 signing to void it or renegotiate based on medical conclusions.
Wow. Good call, Yankees!
