WasWatching.com Water Cooler Talk 10/18/09 Sabathia To Start Game 4 In ALCS
Oct 18

Today, for no reason, I found myself thinking about people like Inside The Stadium Phil, Count The Rings Sean, 10th Inning Journal Phil, Canyon of Heroes Mike, Depressed Fan Brian, Yankees Chick, Scott Proctor Andrew, Baseball Savior Nick, and No Sense Worrying Jen…and sundry others who used to write about the Yankees on the internet.

You know, sometimes things happen and we hear about it – like Pete Abe getting a new gig, or, Kat O’Brien making a career change, or, the sad news about Todd Drew. But, sometimes, others who have spent a fair about of time writing about the Yankees just stop, for the most part, without it being big news.

Now, I happen to know some of the stories behind those who have elected to stop writing about the Yanks. Most times it’s family or work that’s taking up more of their time and not allowing them to “play” around with this stuff. And, I can appreciate that…very much so, in fact.

But, it does not change the fact that I miss their contribution to the Yankees Blogosphere…or whatever you want to call this medium of people adding Yankees content to the internet. So, of those who have moved on, who do you miss the most? Or, are there enough Yankees bloggers, etc., out there now that it’s no big deal if a few drop off the rolls? Heck, would you even miss me if I decided to hang it up? (That last one is a rhetorical question. I know that a few would miss me. Many others would throw a party. And, some wouldn’t even notice at all.)

Back to the main point…who do you miss among those who are no longer doing what they did on the internet with respect to covering the Yankees?

I think in blogging – especially with it being a non-profit enterprise – its easy to float in and out. For everyone like me that dropped out of the rotation (for a combination of work, family and an IT department that started blocking access to BBTF where I used to post), there are others who are coming online and doing a good job.

However, I tend to think that quality rises even more when everyone can do it and there are few very, very good Yankee blogs. So even if I had time to commit, I don’t know what else I’d be able to add.

I’m down to just a handful of Yankee blogs as a reader, and I occasionally opine over at RLYW, but I can’t imagine having the time or effort to do it well, and if you can’t do something well, well then you just shouldn’t do it.

Indeed, I’m down to just a few Yankee blogs myself: WW, RAB, RLYW and LoHud (although I’m fading on LoHud…the new guys try but it’s just not as good as it used to be).

@ MJ:Funny about LoHud, it’s not the same with Pete, is it?

I don’t know, I think once it gels LoHud will be fine. Besides, you need the “access” blog and they appear to get it more than the other NY media outlets.

I’m down to Was Watching, Bronx Banter & Fangraphs. On occasion, I stop by USS Mariner (there’s a lot of good talent evaluation and player development stuff there)

With me, everything started with Netshrine.

There used to be other baseball blogs/pages that I visited and followed, but time constraints prevent me from doing so on a regular basis.

The job I have requires that I have an open IT connection, though they block things like e-mail and instant messaging.

It really isn’t the same without Pete. That’s a testament to how great Pete was in that role.

I do miss Brian at Depressed Fan; his was a nice caustic look at the Yanks.

I miss the regulars on the blog that Kat was the last to keep alive. As a stable group of civil, articulate, varied, mostly intelligent and well-informed fans it lasted several years, with a couple of successive hosts — one of those sites where the discussion among commenters was the real point, though I was a fan of Kat’s reporting. Once she left it died the death.

Nowadays RAB, waswatching, replacement level, and RJG are the places I always check in and occasionally comment. Pete Abe was usually a good read, though 95% of his commenters were a waste of bandwidth and I rarely took the time to sift through looking for the few worth reading. I think the new guys will be able to keep it moving along — the lack of a provocative personality like Pete will lose it some followers but will probably also make his band of trolls lose interest.

I’ll probably feel like a dunce for asking, but what’s RJG?

I’d put it more like 99.9%. For as great as Pete Abe’s site was, his commenters were pretty darn lousy.

RJG = Respect Jeter’s Gangster. I like the light comic relief. Look on the side column under Best of RJG or some such title for Derek Jeter Emoticon Interview for a sample.

Steve, you have much more stamina at this stuff than most of us do! That’s for sure!

lol, we just follow what the owners/bosses tell us to do. blame them!

@ lisaswan: Well, I can tell you that now, being on day # 1,643 of doing “this,” I don’t have as much steam as I used to…. ;-)

I don’t know if anybody is still paying attention to this thread, but if so, one MIA I’m curious about is Melanie Greenberg. I used to like to read Struck Out Looking, but it’s been frozen in time for many weeks now. Anybody know what’s up with that?

  16. Steve Lombardi Says:

    @ cr1:I’ll pass this along.

  17. cr1 Says:

    Thank you, Steve.
