Fifty teams have lost the first two games of a World Series (excluding ties). And, only 11 have come back to win a ring:
1921 – New York Giants
1955 – Brooklyn Dodgers
1956 – New York Yankees
1958 – New York Yankees
1965 – Los Angeles Dodgers
1971 – Pittsburg Pirates
1978 – New York Yankees
1981 – Los Angeles Dodgers
1985 – Kansas City Royals
1986 – New York Mets
1996 – New York Yankees
But, only the 1985 Royals, the 1986 Mets, and the 1996 Yankees came back to win after losing the first two games at home.
That’s it – just three teams have pulled this off. Needless to say, if the Yankees lose tonight, New York will have created some big hill to try and ice skate up…
I am just as relieved as the Steinbrenners are that Joe G got to the WS before Joe Torre…

Must win? Looks like someone forgot to tell Girardi when he put in his house money lineup.
I can live with the Hairston move although I don’t like it, but wasn’t the Molina thing proven to be a crock after Burnett gave up 4 runs in the first inning? It’s ridiculous, and now that Cervelli is gone, will he even pinch hit for him as early as possible?
Different take here: If Burnett needs Molina to pitch well then you give him his best battery-mate. You don’t want AJ to have Posada as an excuse.
I don’t mind benching Swish but giving it to Hairston is crazy. He was a late-season pickup whose numbers againt Pedro are 5 years old. HInske and Gardner are both year-long Yankees who have earned the job. I would have used one of those two.
I’m really getting sick of Girardi. Even if Yanks win the Series he needs to get his act straightened out by intelligent baseball people within the organization or replaced. This is a talented team that has been winning despite him.
