    ...a frog?

Not bird, nor plane, nor even frog, it's just a little 'ole baseball blog!

Took the family out for lunch today at Bobby’s Burger Palace. Lots of fellow Yankees-jackets wearers in there this afternoon. Since it’s all counter-style sitting, I had the chance to listen in on a couple of conversations around me about the Yankees, the Series, etc.

It’s amazing how many people watch SportsCenter, or something like that, and become armed just enough to be able to talk about the team, or the Series, in terms of knowing a few immediate facts, and then talk about it all as if they really know what’s going on with the team, etc.,…but, in reality, the more they talk the more it becomes obvious that they’re no more knowledgeable about the game, Series, etc., than most people are knowledgeable about quantum mechanics…

As we left, my wife asked me “How many times did you want to correct those guys sitting next to us?” And, my answer was “So many times that I lost count…and then stopped caring, completely, about having a curious interest in what they were saying…”

What annoys me is when they become insistent that they know what they’re talking about, when they clearly don’t.

Usually, I just go along with them, act as if I’m paying attention to what they’re saying as I’m enjoying whatever it is I have in front of me at the time.

It’s a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, being a baseball fan gives me an “in” to so many friendships and/or conversations that I can pretty much talk to anyone. On the other hand, I’ve learned so much more about baseball since 2005 (thanks to the internet and the blogosphere) that — at the risk of sounding like a snob — it’s hard to dumb it all down sometimes.

Basically I do what Steve and Raf do, I just go along with it. But it does get annoying sometimes when you hear someone say something so dumb that you want to correct them but you can’t because you don’t want to be a jerk…

How can you hear them over their ear shattering ringtone of “Don’t Stop Believin’” going off every two minutes in the diner?
