It wouldn’t. Even with the previous run, guys like David Cone, Tino Martinez, Jeff Nelson, John Wetteland and Roger Clemens were added when the Jays and M’s and Expos were shedding salaries. That isn’t necessarily true. Posada would’ve backed up @ catcher like he did with Girardi, or he would’ve moved to a different position.

The Yankees, more often than not have gone with the “proven veteran.” Even looking @ 96, it took Tony Fernandez’s broken elbow to get Jeter into the lineup. It took Bernie a couple of years before he was able to stick, what with the Yankee OF being crowded with Kelly, Hall, Tartabull & Barfield. Remember Pat Kelly playing 3b? Mike Lowell was ready, the Yankees extended Scott Brosius instead. Nick Johnson was ready, the Yanks signed Giambi instead.
