Steve, don't mention kicking the tires around Nick Johnson, if Nick ever did that his foot might be in a cast for two years. This guy always gets hurt and always misses big chunks of the season. He's a fine player when he plays but he's too big a risk for injury. I wouldn't touch him.

the Yankees are kicking the tires on bringing back Nick Johnson...the Yankees are shopping for water pistols at the dollar-store, no?

Disingenuous at best; here's what the article actually says:

"Johnson, 31, also has heard from the Giants, Mets and even the Yankees, who view him as a potential fallback at designated hitter if they lose both Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, major-league sources say.

And do you really think the Jays are not going to just trade Halladay without coming to the Yanks for a counter-offer?

I'd be shocked if the Halladay trade got done this soon. If I'm the Jays, I see what some other teams dangle before pulling the trigger. Matsui over Nick Johnson - that's not even close. Not only is Matsui better, but he's worth millions in overseas endorsements.

@ YankCrank:

spot on, both on us being the world champs and not needing to be overly concerned with what other teams are doing just handling our own business this winter for improving the club, and our style lately being to sit back early and then attack late. most of the stuff you hear now in terms of strategy, interest, and potential moves is all fluff anyway as opposed to hard information.

Let's all temper our expectations and reactions to this stuff. Of course the Red Sox are making a push for Halladay, it makes perfect sense and it can very easily happen.

At this point we have no clue what the Yankees are going to do. They can go hard after Halladay and Holliday, or they can do about a million other things. One thing we can learn from Brian Cashman and his past offseasons is, well, Bubba Crosby is going to be our starting CF next year.

In other words, the Yankees have a plan and nobody else knows it, no matter what you hear. We're World Champs, we're fine, let the Red Sox go do what the Red Sox are going to do. We're top dog, they need to dethrone us.

I thought you were opposed to "buying" championships.

I'm so confused...

Kinda the inverse of last offseason.

If all it takes for the Sox to land Halliday is Buchholz and Kelly, I'd be very surprised. But seeing as Beckett is gone after next year, I understand the Red Sox doing whatever it takes to land Halliday. Probably will negotiate an extension as part of the terms of the trade.

I'd, personally, rather have Matsui back then Nick Johnson.
