I like it. He was due to have a raise this year so this is more available money to spend.
Yep. Bruney was due for a raise in arbitration. For someone with an injury history and poor control, it made sense to cut him loose before he got expensive. He probably would’ve been non-tendered, anyway
PTBNL means a spot is opened on the 40-man, I’d like to see who gets that spot (Rule V draft’s coming soon).
I wish him the best of luck in DC.
Chad Jennings from LoHud has a good take on the deal:
“For now, I’d consider it a move to free a spot on the roster, free a little bit of money from the payroll and possibly get something of value in return. In the 2010 bullpen pecking order, Bruney was certainly going to rank behind David Robertson and might have ranked behind Damaso Marte, Alfredo Aceves and even Mark Melancon. Hard-throwing Romulo Sanchez was just added to the roster, giving the Yankees another right-handed power pitcher. Bruney’s solid out of the bullpen, but the Yankees have several similar — and cheaper and younger — options.”

As do I. If he stays healthy and productive he can become their closer and really increase his value. I hope he does this, and will always give him credit for how hard he worked to get in good shape and become a good Yankee reliever.
It doesn’t always work out, but his drive and determination were never in question. Sometimes the body just doesn’t keep up.
Yeah, RHRP with power arms are a dime a dozen. Makes even more sense that the Yanks let Bruney go.
The Nats and Pirates sure do like our AAAA players huh?
Good riddance, Mr. Million Dollar Arm, Ten Cent Head.
You’d have thought that after he lost that weight and ditched the Mike Fetters look that he had actually matured. But blaming that injury this season on the instant replay was the last straw for me.
Btw, for those who haven’t seen our PTBNL is actually the Nationals first overall pick in the Rule V Draft.
Not a bad job there by Cash. Turn an expensive, replaceable arm into top pick for Rule V. You can pick another Johan Santana, Dan Uggla or Victorino or you can pick a dud…either way you get something for nothing.
