How Much Did Sabathia, Burnett & Pettitte Shoulder In 2009?
How many times, in the entire history of the New York Yankees franchise, have the Yankees had three pitchers in a year post a season where they had GS=32+, IP=190+ and W=13+?

So, last season, when CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte turned this trick for New York, it was the first time this has happened in Yankeeland since 2006 – and only the 3rd time it’s happened since George Steinbrenner bought the team in 1973.
I wonder if CC, A.J., and Andy can all post these numbers again in 2010?

It would be great if they could and, honestly, I don’t see why they can’t. But even if not, it’s a good bet that at least two of Sabathia, Burnett, Pettitte and Vazquez can do so and possibly all four can too.
I was shocked to not see the 98 team on the list. They had three starters over 200 innings but Wells did it in 30 starts and Cone had 31.
Another note on the 09 team. When was the last time the Yanks had 4 starters all make over 31 starts?

Because it’s only happened 3 times in the last 37 years of the franchise’s history?

Never.

2003, I think

If the ’70-’72 Yanks could do it with those guys, there’s no reason why the same returning staff — bolstered with another workhorse in Vazquez — can’t do it too.
@ MJ:
Actually, it was a different time before, say, 1985 (or thereabouts). MGRs used to just leave the starting pitchers in the games, no matter what. Much easier to get 190+ IP that way.
@ Steve Lombardi:
I know that but it happened last year so there’s no reason why it can’t happen again.
@ MJ: Well, using that logic, then we can expect alotta walk off wins in 2010 too.
I think its only fair to be concerned (though mildly), i would think AJ and Andy are the key arms that can flare up.. AJ more so than Andy and thats why the loser of the Joba/Phil starter race should be on the ready… i just cant agree that one of those 2 will be wasted in the bullpen, it feels like a crime.. just 2 years back i was thinking of a home grown top 3 of Joba, Phil and Wang.. how the times have changed…
Steve, sry if u have already commented on this, who do you prefer and who do you expect to win the 5th spot?
@ srivinodh:
I expect Joba to get the 5th slot with Hughes staying in the pen – unless one of them tanks really bad in the Spring.
Steve is right. It’s unlikely all three will make it through 2010 with as many starts and innings and wins.
Burnett is the obvious candidate to come up short, but Pettitte could also hit the wall at age 39. CC has a lot of mileage, but I wouldn’t expect him to have a dropoff until the mid-career power pitcher’s crisis…about 4-5 years from now, I would guess.
Vazquez looks reliable enough to pick up some of the slack. Let’s hope Joba can pick up some, now that all the Joba Rules are over with.

I refuse to get rid of my Joba Rules shirt!

Ok, that was incorrect, but they did have 4 starters with 200ip that made at least 30 starts
Mussina: 214 (31)
Wells: 213 (30)
Clemens: 211 (33)
Pettitte: 208 (33)
