Hawk Dawson made Cooperstown today.
Some fun via the Complete Baseball Encyclopedia:

Former Yankee Bob Meusel – aka Long Bob – should have played longer…if he would have played as long as Dawson, maybe he would have made Cooperstown too?

There actually was talk about putting Meusel in the HOF. IIRC it was about the time of Earle Combs’s election in 1970. Of course, Meusel’s limited playing time (barely 1,400 games), his poor relationship with the press (“He didn’t learn to say ‘hello’ until it was time to say ‘goodbye’.”) and with his manager (“Bob Meusel’s attitude is one of just plain indifference!”) didn’t help much. Still, he played on 3 World Championship teams and averaged about 117 RBIs per 154 games. Not bad.
I was a little surprised Fred McGriff’s vote total was so low. He may be one of those guys who gets in 2024. Never had a monster HR season, but did hit 30 dingers 10x, and would have had 10 seasons with 100 RBI if you pro-rated the ’94 & ’95 strike shortened seasons. He did hit a respectable .284 lifetime and had almost 2500 hits.
Oh, and did I mention the Yanks traded him for Dale Murray in one of their worst trades ever?
