Agreed. Which is one reason (of many) that I hate michael kay.

What disturbs me, and anyone who has the Extra Innings package or watches the free preview the first week of the season would see, how many MLB team broadcasters use the term “we” that it’s cringe worthy.

We have plenty of reasons to rank on Sterling, but he never refers to the Yanks as “we”. Nor do any of the other team broadcasters in NY – including the Mets.

There are exceptions like Scooter or Ron Santo who are team lifers that can be cut a little slack. But generally I’d prefer the broadcasters show enthusiasm but not outright homerism.

FWIW, I never use the “we” when referring to the Yankees. At least, when I’m sober. Not sure if I’ve ever done this when drunk, but, it’s possible?

And, in general, I sorta have a funny reaction when I hear people use “we” – for all the obvious reasons…like them not playing or working for the team.

Now, that said, at least 10 times I year, if not more, I do hear it from my wife about “what’s wrong with me” because I care so much about the Yankees and that I take the losses and news so seriously. Her line is usually something like “Do the Yankees put money in your pocket? Are you on the payroll? No. So, why do you let these things bother you so much?”

So, maybe, in a way, even though I don’t use “we,” I’m acting it…nonetheless…by my attachment, actions and emotions?

As a Twins fan I do get a little frustrated about the whole “we suck no WS this year” thing, but I’m sure it’s mostly out of jealousy. As long as you know your sh*t. No bandwagon / Jay-Z “Yankee” fans allowed.

I always use “we”, with every one of my teams. I think it’s kinda pointless to criticize the use. Beat writers are doing their job covering the team. I am writing (or speaking) as a fan purely – not for a newspaper to earn a living.

Maybe I jumped the gun a bit on criticizing the use of the term “we.” For example, when it comes to anything BC-sports related, I usually say “we.” I.e- “We’re not going to make the NCAA tournament this year with the way we’re playing.” I think it’s fine when you do that when referring to your alma mater.

It’s just a thing I’ve noticed that people always refer to their favorite professional team in that same vein. I can see that it evokes a feeling of camaraderie and oneness with your team. And if you’re shelling out hundreds of dollars to see the team, then why shouldn’t you refer to your favorite team in the possessive form? I can definitely see that side of the argument.

Personally, I don’t like to do that when it comes to the Yankees. It probably has to do with the fact that you wouldn’t find a beat writer referring to his team as “we” in the newspaper.
