Earlier today, Steve Lombardi posted a comparison between the Yankees and Phillies top salaried players, Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Howard. While A-Rod and Howard are similar in terms of contract and power at the plate, I’ve got a more accurate comp in Mark Teixeira.

They both play first, and they both hit in the heart of their respective orders. Also, they both started their current long term deal in 2009, in their age 29 season. They also have very similar contracts:

    Mark Teixeira
    2009: $20 million – Age 29
    2010: $20 million – Age 30
    2011: $22.5 million – Age 31
    2012: $22.5 million – Age 32
    2013: $22.5 million – Age 33
    2014: $22.5 million – Age 34
    2015: $22.5 million – Age 35
    2016: $22.5 million – Age 36
    Total: $180MM including a $5MM signing bonus

    Ryan Howard
    2009: $15 million – Age 29
    2010: $19 million – Age 30
    2011: $20 million – Age 31
    2012: $20 million – Age 32
    2013: $20 million – Age 33
    2014: $25 million – Age 34
    2015: $25 million – Age 35
    2016: $25 million – Age 36
(Howard also has a $23MM club option for 2017 or $10MM buyout)
    Total: $179MM at least.

Now, if you break it down this way, you could say hey, maybe the Yanks didn’t overpay with the Tex signing. Or, you could say wow the Phillies overpaid, here. Me? I’d gladly pay an extra million dollars for Tex, how about you?

howard isn’t deserving of his contract whatso ever.. he isnt even the best player or thwe most valuable player on his own team. utley is a better all around player and much more vaulable in that lineup then howard. i think u can make a legit agruement he isnt even one of the 3 or 4 most valuable players on the phillies.

I’d take Tex for the same money. He plays a real first base out there, not this “hide the worst athlete at 1st” nonsense that we lived with while Giambi was here.

All I can say is I hope Tex and ARod dont get cranky bodies any time soon, i still cant believe Hank Steinbrenner gave that contract to ARod. They had him on the ropes, they could have signed abt 15-20% lesser than 275 Mill…

      Age 42 @ 3B Yikes

but that wont be as ugly as Howard @ 35 and 23 Mill…

Ruben Amaro is a f%^&n’ dope. They definitely overpaid for Ryan” The Strikeout” King Howard. RH was worth money but 25 mill a year? sheer insanity. Now Amaro can’t resign Werth because of this signing. Plus add Halladay’s hefty salary increase next year to the tune of 20 million a year and Rollins free agency after 2011, Amaro has made a big misstep. And the Phils do well BUT they don’t do Yankee$ or Red $ox well! I wonder what Prince “King Blubber” Fielder will get now? If some team pays him 25 mill it would be sheer insanity. I can see Albert “The Best Player” in Baseball Pujols make something like 32 mill a year BUT King Blubber? Man, that contract will make Howard’s look like a bargain in comparison!

as for MR Do Nothing in Pril Teix I don’t know if I would pay him one red cent more. I like his play in the field BUT the whole offensive slumber he experiences every April is annoying. Then again, the Yanks knew what they were getting when they signed him. That being said, Texi is more valauble than Howard is. Heck, even werth is better as a 3-dimensional player than Howard is.
