Just as baseball and apple pie are staples of America, statistics and fathers are the hemoglobin of baseball. So, since today is Father’s Day (really, it is, Hallmark says so!), I want to wish all the fathers out there a Happy Father’s Day!

I have often thought that Shoeless Joe (and therefore, Field of Dreams) was not really about baseball, but the relationship between fathers and sons, with baseball as the medium of communication. (This is not an especially original or brilliant insight into the novel/movie.)

This idea is also expressed by the Daniel Stern character, Phil Berquist, when trying to explain why baseball is so important to (American) men to Helen Slater’s Bonnie Rayburn, he explains that when their relationship was so bad, he couldn’t talk to his father about anything else, they could still talk baseball.

My own relationship with my father has never gotten that bad, but even when he was mad at me, or vice versa, we could still talk baseball, the Yankees.

Happy Father’s Day to my dad, still a Yankee fan at 84, and to all Dads and Yankee Fans everywhere.
