• How Important Is Sabathia To The Yankees?

    Posted by on October 21st, 2010 · Comments (4)

To date, over the last two post-seasons, the Yankees have won 16 games. And, seven of those sixteen games were started by CC Sabathia.

Yeah, I’d say CC is pretty important to the Yankees.  And, that Pettitte guy ain’t bad too.

Yankees post-season wins, 2009 to date, by those who started the game:

    Rk Player #Matching   W L W-L% ERA GS
    1 CC Sabathia 7 Ind. Games 5 0 1.000 3.18 7
    2 Andy Pettitte 5 Ind. Games 5 0 1.000 3.16 5
    3 A.J. Burnett 3 Ind. Games 1 0 1.000 1.86 3
    4 Phil Hughes 1 Ind. Games 1 0 1.000 0.00 1

His three uneven 2010 playoff starts notwithstanding, Sabathia is a horse and is critical to the Yankees’ chances.

It is my sincere hope that the Yankees sign Cliff Lee to pair with Sabathia so that the team can have another horse to pull the cart to #28 or #29, as the case may be.

Definition of an ace. Guy would have won 24-25 games this year with a bit more bullpen support. His mechanics seem a little off, but he’s still effective. I can’t imagine that Andy will be ready to walk away. He’s still to good, his arm is holding up fine, and he clearly still has the fire.

Don’t want to rain on the parade, but has anyone looked at the weather for Dallas area this weekend? Might we get a delay in here that could alter the pitching line up? If Hughes can come up big on Friday, we might not play until Sunday.

This is the case that makes the point. Win on Friday and anything can happen after that. The Rangers, for all their energy and very capable performance to date, will start to grip if we get out in front on Friday.

WasWatching: This is unrelated to the thread….but I was looking at stats on Baseball-Reference and Yankee player ALCS have an “L” listed under the W/L column

      Let’s prove those SOB’s wrong……..

FWIW, the Yankees have won 16 games in the post-season, so far, since 2009.

Pettitte and Sabathia combined have started 12 of those 16 games where the Yankees won.

On the flip side, since 2009, the Yankees have only lost 3 games in the post-season where CC and Andy started the game – and two of those 3, IIRC, were where Cliff Lee pitched a gem of a game against them.
