Back in 1968 when the Cardinals were leading the Tigers 3 games to 1 (with Games 6 and 7 if necessary to be played in St. Louis) I remember one of the smarter kids in school telling me that it was mathematically impossible for Detroit to win the World Series because the Tigers would have to beat Bob Gibson in Game 7 and nobody beats Gibson in Game 7—the Yankees didn’t in ’64; the Red Sox didn’t in ’67. So it was all over.
Only it wasn’t.
