John Farrell is the new Blue Jays skipper.

He’s well respected.  And, Farrell is just 4 months older than me and went to High School about 30 minutes away from where I live now.  So, personally, there’s an interest connection for me.  But, more so, I wonder if this is just  a positive for Toronto – or, is it also a take-away for Boston too?  In any event, the A.L. East could be a very interesting place next season.  It used to be just Boston and New York.  And, the last three seasons, Tampa Bay has been in the mix.  Now, the O’s have Showalter and the Jays have Farrell.

The Yankees have to play something like half their schedule against A.L. East teams.  And, there’s very few gimmies in that bunch any more, is there?

Don’t overrate the managers. Players win ballgames. As long as the O’s have mediocre talent, they’ll still be a last place team, hovering around the .400 WP%.

Agreed. I’ve believed for many years that baseball managers have the least impact on wins and losses of any of the professional sports. Success will come down to the players on the field, and we’ll see what the Jays/O’s bring in 2011.

I agree completely. Baseball managers tend to be greatly overrated.

The Jays have a very good farm system and will have their competitive window opening around 2012 and 2013. I have a hard time believing that Jose Bautista is for real and, thus, their offensive output in 2010 seems like a bit of a mirage to me.

The O’s…I’m sad for them. I have a buddy that is now a pro scout and an ex-Orioles blogger. He doesn’t see much reason for optimism over the next several years. They graduated a few good players from the system (Matusz, Arrieta, Wieters) but they still have lots and lots of holes and their front office hasn’t shown any particular aptitude with low-cost free agent signings (Garrett Atkins, Miguel Tejada, Mike Gonzalez). In other words, Baltimore will continue to stink on ice for at least another handful of years
