   Wow, I didn’t realize he was 80…he’s in great shape for 80. (Ignoring his gut I mean).

   In the Spring of 1965 Shatner was starring in a CBS police drama called “For The People.” He played a very zealous Assistant D.A., Jessica Walter (later Lucille on “Arrested Development”) played his lovely and artistic wife, and Howard Da Silva (famously blaclisted in the 1950′s and best remembered as Ben Franklin in “1776″) was his boss. The series, well written and well acted, was a huge hit—with critics that is, not with the viewing public who were tuned into NBC’s “Bonanza” at that time slot. And so it got cancelled and Shatner was available to audition for the lead role in “Star Trek” when the ill-fated Jeffrey Hunter (Jesus Christ in “King of Kings” and who played the lead in the pilot) decided he didn’t want any part of a silly sci-fi series. Strange how those things work out.

   I loved the original Star Trek. The best of it is still pretty relevant, ignoring the silly uniforms and such. But, looking back, the worst of it is, well pretty awful. Still, way ahead of its times, in a great many ways.

   Live long and prosper.

   It was, and still is, very good stuff.

   The sci-fi stuff was way advanced for it’s time. Some, but not all, of the special effects were off the charts good given the time-frame. Good pace and dialogue. Libidinous crew with swagger and female officers in go-go boots? Gold! Pure Gold!

   Nothing in the Sci-fi TV genre touched it until Firefly. X-files at times.
