Why Culver was not playing in Charleston this season, I dunno. Seems like the Yankees are babying him.

It isn’t that the org’s babying him, he has to show that he can handle A- ball. He only spent part of last season @ Staten Island. Once he does, he’ll be moved up to Charleston.
I wonder how many 1st round picks spend their second season of pro-ball in short-season A-ball?
@ Steve Lombardi:
Good question. Looking at Culver, he played Rookie ball, then was moved up to Staten Island for 15 games (43 AB’s). I would guess that after he amasses a certain number of at-bats at that level, if he shows proficiency at that level, he’ll be moved up to Charleston or Tampa.
It is probably more reasonable to assume the organization wanted him to work on improving fundamentals. Any major alterations in a swing, for example, require frequent repetition, not something that can be done while playing every day. If you prefer to call that “babying,” feel free. To me, the bigger concern would be why a player who needs so much work on a core baseball skill is worthy of a first-round draft pick, but I’ve been beating up on the Culver selection for over a year and need to go over it.
