Then again, they weren’t going to sign Rafael Soriano too.  Via the Daily News -

Any conspiracy theorist who has pondered Mets shortstop Jose Reyes being fitted for Yankee pinstripes, either later this season or in the near future, can forget it. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman put an end to speculation Wednesday night.

“That’s just not going to happen,” he said.

Cashman gave a vote of confidence to Derek Jeter and the backup who is filling in admirably for him while he works to return from the injured right calf that landed him on the 15-day disabled list.

“We have an everyday shortstop in Derek Jeter,” said Cashman, who was at the Waldorf-Astoria for the CYO Club of Champions Tribute to receive the Sportsman of the Year award. “And I think we have an everyday shortstop that would be playing for a lot of clubs in Eduardo Nuñez. The Yankees don’t have a need now or in the future for a shortstop.

“But we do need a setup man.”

Or Mark T. in the same vein.

Tex and Sori were different in that we did have places for them on the team, Cash just said for various reasons we wouldnt sign them. We actually DONT have any place for Reyes, IMO.

There will be too many machinations to make Reyes fit, either for 1/2 a season, or after the season.

      @ clintfsu813:

And, why Bubba was the CFer until he signed Johnny Damon.

That’s Cashman’s job to never sound hungry. In this case, I hope he sticks to his guns and that George’s boys don’t overrule him. The Yanks have Jeter. Signing Reyes would be a disaster for a lot of reasons.

THANK GOD!!!! I never want to see Reyes in pinstripes. He’s the next Carlos Beltran. He’ll get a bunch of money based on decent seasons and one monster season and then either be hurt or not produce for the length of his monster contract.

I couldn’t agree with you more. Knowing the Mets, they will be the ones to re-sign him too! :)

Yeah, we have no interest in Generalissimo Francisco Franco Rodriguez either…
