    A.J. Burnett is starting tomorrow.

    Brutal game tonight, in any event. Just ugly. That’s not championship level play. Not even close.

      It’s going to be a tough act to follow. Hughes really lowered the bar tonight. But I think Burnett is perfectly capable of underperforming him and should meet the challenge with a greater ineffectiveness.

      My idea for the Post Season rotation:

      CC
      Colon
      Nova
      Garcia

      Phil Hughes is the West Coast A.J. Burnett. Here is Phil Hughes in his own words from today’s Yankee Insider in the Daily News, “I’ve regained my stuff, I wouldn’t say 100% but certainly more than I had then (referring to an earlier meeting against Boston). And I’ve got confidence. Before I was hoping not to get crushed whereas now I have that agressive attitude and mind set again”. I think this guy is a major headcase, we’ve seen it three years in a row, put him in Milwaukee or K.C. or Oakland and maybe he can be effective but with the Yankees, forget it. I hope for his sake and the Yankees sake he is moved this offseason.

      One month to go, still no second starter. Right now that position would have to fall on Nova, some spot for a rookie.

      Did you really expect the Yanks to win this game knowing it was Hughes against Beckett? Again for tomorrow do you really expect Burnett to beat Lester? Answer for both is no…and you can say the same with expecting the Yanks to win with CC yesterday. So this series is going as predicted so far…Fact is the Yanks are throwing their 5th and 6th starters against the Sox #1 and #2 starters here. This isn’t what would happen in the playoffs. Given all that Yanks still got to Beckett and had a shot tonight…too bad Hughes pitched to Big Papi with 1st base open and Logan not getting Elsbury out in that spot but in most any other ballpark that is a deep flyball out.

      Didn’t he strike him out the previous AB with the same pitch? I think that was just a case of going to the well too often…

      Honestly, Hughes DID have better stuff than his previous outings…touching 95 a few times. It just wasn’t good enough.

      Watching Hughes pitch is painful. Not Burnett painful, but close. He’s just not good enough right now, and I don’t really think he ever will be. He should’ve been pulled right after walking Reddick, even if Varitek’s double was a lucky shot. That’s why you don’t walk Reddick.

      Is there a bigger bust this season than Hughes? Cashman gambled the season on the fact that he’d be a frontline starter. He should have sat by Lee’s door at the start of free agency and blown him away with a CC type offer. Probably have a rotation of CC, Lee, Pettitte right now.

      But he gambles on Hughes and we all lose big time.

      Not to mention the GM malpractice of not getting another lefty for the pen all season. Does he not see that the road to any WS goes thru Bos and Philly? Wouldn’t a Mike Gonzalez have looked good as a lefty? Even a Choate?

      What you fail to understand is that Hughes and Burnett were NOT suppose to be 5th and 6th starter. Burnett IS suppose to be the yankees number 2. The fact that you’re assigning them as #5 and 6 (6?) shows the problem.

      Take of your fan googles. Sabathia gave up 10 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings. Good luck with that next time. It could easily be 2-0 boston. The what if game is for suckers.

      You’re confused. That wasn’t down the line at 310. That was far closer to 379 in left center. That ball is out in plenty of ball parks.

      @ Jake1: I’ll always believe that Hanks statement, ‘that it behooves the young man (Lee) to come to the Yankees’ pissed a man like Lee totally off. Cashman never had a chance w/ Lee after that remark.

      Actually, when he gave up the HR to Ortiz, 1st base was filled with Adrian Gonzalez. When Ortiz batted in the 3rd, there was a base open, and the Yanks correctly walked him intentionally, but got burned anyway when Hughes hung a changeup.

      A few points you’re missing:

      1) The double header on Sunday with no days off in between is what required the Yanks to throw Hughes and AJ back to back. If it had been Saturday as scheduled, one of them wouldn’t have started in this series.

      2) That Ellsbury hit the ball well enough to go out of many parks isn’t really the issue, although that’s his 1st opposite field HR of the season, and it just got over the top of the Monster. The issue is that Logan got squeezed and had him struck on 4 pitches if the strike zone is called correctly in that AB.

      Lee’s agent was quoted as saying, “There’s nothing the Yanks could’ve done.” What part of that statement don’t people get? He wanted the Phillies; that’s all.

      Pitching problems aside, it doesn’t help that Big Tex is 6-51 w/ 4rbi against RS this year.

      Hey look at the bright side – we could have traded the farm for Ubaldo Jimenez, and wound up with another 5th – 6th starter. In August he is 2-1 with a 5.56 ERA and averaging 5.2 innings over 6 starts, and opponents hit .297 against him.
