    So, if the Red Sox blow it this year, does “9 & 24″ become the new “1918″ chant?

    You know..a nine game lead with 24 games to play…

    Like the Mets with 7 and 17 in 2007…

      That will work…. “9 ‘n 24″!.

      This will leave a mark on the team/organizational brain. They will carry this choke for a while. Might even cause them to do some stupid things re: staffing and free agants. Some of the Yankees carry the 2004 collapse with them, but at least, like any playoff underperformance, that failure occurred over just a few days. This has been going on for a month now and they can’t stop the bleeding. These guys were being written about in the pre-season as ready to displace the ’27 Yankees as the greatest team of all time. They swaggered for months after whipping the Yankees like stepchildren, only to see it crumble as they gripped tighter and tighter. The manager got exposed too, as he couldn’t find the right buttons to push. Crawford has been tarnished. Beckett and Lester and Lackey have been stained. The bullpen is also sullied. There are many Buckners on this team.

      Ellsbury and Pedroia will at least be able to look themselves in the mirror.

      One thing here… A long term baseball guy once told me that the key element in successful major league players was their ability to deal with failure. Undoubtedly this has to be scaled to such a huge collapse.

      Who is their catcher? Both regulars are banged up. Do you really want a rookie in there right now.

      Besides Ellsbury and Pedroia, Ortiz, Gonzalez, and I hate to say, Pablebon have also held on to their end of the bargain. Overall, the lineup has done fine. It’s their starters and BP that have let them down.

      I’m elated.

      Well, depends on what happens over the next two games on whether or not this will catch on…. If they make it and win the Series, nobody will care about this collapse.

      According to ESPN, the Red Sox were still burning the phones trying to trade for a pitcher to start for them Wednesday night so they could hold Lester off on regular rest in case of a playoff game in Tampa Thursday.

      Aceves has been a savior for the Sox. I still don’t understand why Cashman did not bring him back.

      Cashman wanted to bring him back, but not on a ML deal.
