Think about this when he opts out…

Not compelling enough to justify letting him walk away. And, frankly, although I can’t speak to the 2007 ALDS game (which I don’t remember well enough at this point), I know Sabathia got badly squeezed in Game 3 of the 2011 ALDS. It might not have changed the outcome of the game — although I have to imagine better umpiring would’ve led to fewer baserunners — but it certainly would’ve mitigated the six walks by at least one or two.

Sabathia is the best pitcher on the team and the best pitcher since an in-his-prime Mussina (2001-2003). To let him walk to be the height of stupidity, especially if couched in the reasoning that he’s allowed six walks in a playoff game.

I’m not that concerned about walking 6 twice but I sure am concerned about his weight and extending his contract. He’s already had knee problems. As he ages one would have to assume his weight will affect his ability to pitch at the same level he has.

The eye test at least this year had him squeezed on a lot of calls. But the other eye test saw his body seem to “drift” to the right during the delivery. Is that added inertia from his weight gain to blame? I don’t know, but I would imagine that much extra weight won’t get easier to compensate for as he ages….
